Fat Transfer to Buttocks is a surgical procedure performed with Vaser Liposuction, to extract excess fat cells from specific areas of the body. These extracted fat cells are then transferred into the buttock area, to modify the size and shape of the buttocks. The fat used is the patient’s own fat, and is sourced from suitable parts of the body including the stomach, hips, lower back, or sacral region.
At Cosmos Clinic, we use Vaser Liposuction for all liposuction procedures and fat transfer surgeries.
Fat Transfer to Buttocks is a liposuction and fat grafting procedure carried out with the application of a local anaesthetic numbing solution in each treated area, along with deep IV sedation (general anaesthesia). The choice of sedation is determined through consultations with the medical practitioner, taking into account the unique needs and medical conditions of the patient.
Vaser Liposuction is a fat removal procedure to remove excess fat from specific parts of the body, before it is harvested for fat grafting. Utilising ultrasound technology, a cannula is inserted into the fatty tissue via small incision sites, to break apart and liquify excess fat in the targeted areas, before it is extracted via suction.
After extraction, the fat undergoes preparation and is then injected throughout the buttock area. The injected fat is transferred to modify the shape of the buttocks.
BUTTOCK FAT TRANSFER SURGERY
Surgery may be an option for suitable individuals desiring buttock enhancement using their own fat cells for fat grafting into the buttock area. Patient suitability for cosmetic procedures including a Fat Transfer Buttock Augmentation procedure is always determined by the doctor during the initial consultations, and may incorporate meeting criteria including:
For Australian patients, or for patients wanting to undergo Fat Transfer to Buttocks surgery in Australia, a GP referral, two initial consultations, including one in-person consultation with the doctor performing your surgery, and a mandatory minimum seven day cooling off period following your second consultation, are all required before you can book to have any type of cosmetic surgery including a fat transfer to the buttocks.
We understand that the cost to undergo a Fat Transfer Buttock Augmentation procedure is something all potential patients consider. At Cosmos Clinic Sydney, our procedure prices will always start from a minimum starting cost of $7,700 for the base price. However, the price for a procedure doesn’t fit a uniform one-price-fits-all flat rate.
The total cost of surgery will vary from patient to patient, depending on factors such as:

WHAT DOES BUTTOCK FAT TRANSFER SURGERY INVOLVE
Liposuction with buttock fat transfer is a surgical procedure that can take anywhere from two to four hours depending on the individual patient’s needs, the number of areas of the body being treated, and the amount of fat transferred.
After undergoing fat transfer surgery, it’s usually recommended to allocate an average of 14 days to rest and recuperate during the recovery process. The length of time needed for recovery will vary based on factors including the nature of your job, and the areas of the body treated during the procedure.
For the purpose of minimising swelling and promoting the best possible healing, compression garments must be worn for a minimum of six weeks following surgery. It’s worth noting that the final results of the surgery might take up to six months or longer to fully settle.
After undergoing a fat transfer to the buttocks, it’s possible that the appearance of your buttocks might be slightly larger than anticipated. As an estimated 80% of the transferred fat cells are likely to survive the process, the doctor might inject a bit more fat to factor in any projected fat cell death. As the weeks and months progress post-surgery, the initial swelling should diminish.
Following the procedure, it’s common to experience bruising, swelling, discomfort and pain, which is managed with prescription pain relief provided by your doctor. It’s imperative to diligently follow the post-procedure aftercare guidelines provided, ensure attendance at all scheduled follow ups, and self-perform daily lymphatic drainage massages on all of the areas of the body treated.
It is advised to take certain precautions to support your buttocks during the recovery process. One of these aftercare precautions is to try and minimise direct pressure on the treated area when possible. This can help the transferred fat cells receive a stable blood supply. Direct pressure, such as sitting or lying on your back, might affect the blood circulation to the newly transferred fat cells, potentially impacting the final results.
If situations arise where sitting becomes necessary, Cosmos Clinic recommends using a specialised pillow, or adjust your posture and sit forward on your thighs to reduce direct pressure on the buttocks.
It’s important to note that not all transferred fat may survive after the procedure. The amount of fat that successfully integrates can vary.
There are also additional steps that can be taken by patients to assist the grafted fat. Such measures encompass wearing the compression garments, refraining from putting direct pressure on the buttocks during the recovery period, and ensuring weight remains stable with no excessive weight gain or weight loss.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT SURGERY
A Fat Transfer Buttock Augmentation procedure is a fat transfer surgical procedure that carries potential risks, side effects, and complications, which can be permanent. Some of these potential risks, side effects, and complications from surgery can include but are not limited to:
Scarring will always occur with cosmetic surgery. The incisions needed for liposuction and fat grafting are small. The appearance and final result of these incision site scars will vary, depending on each individual patient and their scarring history.
Buttock fat transfer surgery with Vaser Liposuction involves using your own fat cells taken from certain areas of the body, to change the size and enhance the shape of the buttocks. Buttock implants are a plastic surgery procedure which utilises a physical silicone implant inserted into the buttock area to also change the shape and size.
Buttock implants may be an option, if you are unable to gain and maintain a higher weight for fat grafting surgery. If you are considering buttock implants versus fat transfer with lipo, you must always consult with a specialist plastic surgeon and discuss the downtime, recovery process, potential risks, and side effects specific to your desired surgery.
An adequate amount of fat is required for surgery. For some patients who do not have enough fat, they may be able to gain and maintain a higher weight, if it is a healthy option. If gaining weight is not possible, patients may consider other cosmetic procedures such as buttock implants or a non-surgical procedure.
No, another person’s excess fat cells should never be used. Your body will recognise the injected fat cells are not yours, immediately reject them, and the tissue will die. Using another person’s fat can put your personal safety at risk, and can cause serious long-term health complications.
