Scar Treatment Information

A multi-modal approach, which may include laser treatments, skin needling, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), and Volume Enhancement Treatments, could be beneficial. The effectiveness of these treatments can vary based on individual circumstances.

New collagen production can take up to 3 – 6 months for the full results*, so expect a gradual improvement in acne scarring over this time. Volume Enhancement Treatments will provide a more instant result while waiting for the full effects of new collagen production. Acne scarring is difficult to treat however with a multi-modal approach vast improvements can be made.

Some patients may see improvements in the appearance of acne scars and pigmentation as new collagen fibres are produced following certain treatments, though individual results can vary.

The downtime will vary from 1-3 days. The best results will be seen at 3months post treatment.

Volume Enhancement Treatments can be a great option for instant improvements with little to no downtime. Volume Enhancement Treatments can last 1-2 years and are effective at treating scarring (ice pick, keloid, and rolling scars). Prices for Volume Enhancement Treatments/Dermal Stimulators start from $350.
Fractional Laser or Skin Needling + Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP): Induces new collagen formation over 3-6 months. Downtime is 1-4 days and 1-3 sessions may be required. Prices for Skin Needling vary between $600 – $800 with PRP. Prices for Fractional Laser vary between $700 – $1,200.
Skin Needling + PRP and/or Volume Enhancement Treatments for mild-moderate acne scarring is optimal approach. Prices for Skin Needling vary between $600 – $800 with PRP. Prices for Volume Enhancement Treatments/Dermal Stimulators start from $350.

What causes acne scarring?

Acne scars occur as a result of abnormal collagen production during healing. Teenage acne is a major cause for many adults being left with unsightly acne scars, even after the active acne has been successfully treated. Acne scarring can be very difficult to treat, its appearance can be vastly improved when combining treatments that are aimed at the formation of new collagen production.

What is the level of discomfort for these acne scar treatments?

Fractional Laser: A topical anaesthetic is applied to maintain your comfort during the procedure. Afterwards, cool compresses can be used to minimise discomfort.
Skin Needling: A topical anaesthetic is applied and you may feel a very mild prickling sensation.
PRP: This treatment is very similar to a blood test and you may experience a mild prick sensation.
Volume Enhancement Treatment/ Dermal Stimulator: These options have very minimal discomfort, but you may feel a small pricking in the area.
