    FAT TRANSFER BREAST AUGMENTATION

    Considering the Procedure

Am I a good candidate for a breast fat transfer procedure?

Breast fat transfer may be a suitable option for women looking for a natural enhancement in breast size without the use of implants. Criteria considered for suitability includes, but is not limited to:

    • You are in good physical and mental health.
    • You have realistic expectations regarding the results a fat transfer procedure can achieve.
    • You understand fat injections to the breasts produces a subtle result, and more than one round of surgery may be necessary.
    • You have good skin elasticity and firm skin tone.
    • You have enough excess fat in suitable areas of your body to extract using Vaser Lipo.
    • You do not have any blood circulation problems.
    • You are a non-smoker or are willing to quit before and after surgery.

It is essential to understand that having realistic result expectations and understanding that multiple rounds of fat transfer surgery may be required, are essential components of being considered a good candidate for this cosmetic procedure.

What cup size will I be after one round of surgery?

Following a round of fat grafting surgery, the extent of enlargement in breast shape can vary among individuals. This option provides natural results that are subtle but noticeable.

If you want a larger cup size increase than what one fat grafting procedure can achieve, you may wish to consider alternative options such as “natural-look” traditional breast implants.

Are there any requirements to have surgery?

Before being able to book for cosmetic surgery in Australia, including to have a fat transfer to breast augmentation procedure, there are specific requirements that all individuals must meet. These include obtaining a referral from a General Practitioner (GP), attending two initial consultations a minimum seven days apart, including one consultation in-person with the doctor who will be conducting the surgery, and observing a mandatory minimum seven day cooling off period after the second consultation.

How much does a breast fat transfer cost?

We understand that the cost to have cosmetic surgery in Australia is an element patients will consider in their decision-making process. Breast augmentation procedures using your own fat do not fit a one-price-fits-all formula, and the price to have a fat grafting procedure varies from patient to patient. The total costs incurred to have your harvested fat transferred into your breasts will depend on multiple factors, including but not limited to:

    • The amount of fat to be removed from each donor area.
    • The number of areas of the body being treated with liposuction.
    • The type of anaesthetic used.
    • The amount of time spent in surgery.
    • The specific medical needs and surgical requirements of each individual patient.

At Cosmos Aesthetics, our fat transfer breast augmentation procedures start from a minimum starting cost of $8,800 for the base price. To receive an exact quote to have a breast fat transfer procedure, please contact our friendly team.

WHAT DOES A BREAST FAT GRAFTING PROCEDURE INVOLVE

    Having a Procedure

How long does the procedure take?

The length of time Vaser Lipo with fat grafting can take will vary from two to four hours on average. This time range is dependent on many factors including the needs of the individual, the number of areas of the body being treated, and the amount of fat being transferred.

Is there any downtime after surgery?

Fat transfer to breasts with Vaser Lipo is a day case surgical procedure, and patients are able to be discharged to go home on the same day as their procedure. Bruising, swelling, and discomfort, are all to be expected post-procedure. The levels of discomfort experienced will vary, and to help you manage this and be comfortable following surgery, you will be prescribed pain relief medication by your doctor, and provided with detailed post-procedure information.

Depending on a range of personal factors including the number of areas and parts of your body treated with Vaser Lipo, individual past healing, and your sensitivity to surgical discomfort, most patients need an average of 5-7 days recovery time post-procedure. This is just a guide and is not a recovery time guarantee. The projected downtime needed for your individual circumstances, will be discussed during your initial consultations with the doctor.

How long is the recovery time after surgery?

The recovery time needed to rest and recuperate after surgery varies depending on multiple factors. Patients are usually able to resume most light activities around one week post-procedure, whilst strenuous activities including intense exercise should be avoided for around six weeks.

After your fat transfer to breast augmentation surgery, your breasts will be supported in a post-operative bra, and you will need to avoid wearing a regular underwire bra for six weeks. You will also be required to wear compression garments on the areas of your body treated with Vaser Lipo for six weeks (three weeks full-time + three weeks part-time), to minimise swelling and support skin retraction.

How much fat will be transferred into my breasts?

A few hundred millilitres of fat are usually transferred into the breasts to change the shape and cup size. The precise amount depends on factors such as the amount of fat extracted from the parts of your body being treated with Vaser Lipo, and the space available in the breasts. The volume of fat being transferred will be discussed as part of your treatment plan during the consultations.

When will I notice the results from having surgery?

You may find that your breasts appear noticeably bigger immediately after having a breast fat transfer procedure. Due to at least 50% of the transferred fat cells surviving with the gentle technique we use at Cosmos Aesthetics, your doctor may transfer a little bit more fat than required to account for the projected fat cell death. As the weeks and months progress post-surgery, the initial swelling will slowly stabilise and resolve, providing a clearer view of the final results of your breast shape and size increase.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT BREAST FAT TRANSFER SURGERY

    Understanding the Procedure

What are the risks and side effects of fat transfer breast augmentation?

A fat transfer breast augmentation is a surgical procedure, and all surgeries have risks, side effects, and potential complications, which must always be considered. Some possible risks, side effects, and complications from having Vaser Liposuction and fat grafting surgery can include, but are not limited to:

    • Pain and aching
    • Bruising and bleeding
    • Persistent swelling
    • Delayed healing
    • Infection
    • Poor scarring
    • Asymmetry/uneven appearance
    • Unsatisfactory results
    • Breast cysts
    • Changes in skin sensation and numbness
    • Blood clots
    • Death of fat cells, resulting in the need for revision surgery
    • Fat emboli and/or pulmonary embolism

Will breast fat transfer increase my risk of breast cancer?

There is no proof that a fat transfer into the breast has any impact on breast cancer, although there is also no proof that it does not. This procedure has been widely accepted in Europe and Japan for over 20 years. RACS has stated that fat transfer into the breast is as safe as other breast enlargements techniques. RACS has also stated that the fat injected into the breast does not make it more difficult to detect breast cancer.

It is important to note there is a risk of fat necrosis 1.2% chance, calcification 5% chance, cysts 6.5% chance, and infection 1% chance (Orholt et al, 2020). After having a procedure, we always advise that you tell the radiologist that you have had a fat transfer to the breast when you go for a mammogram. This ensures the technician is aware when reviewing the findings to observe for differences between calcification and breast cancer.

Are there other fat extraction and transfer methods available?

Our doctors, Dr Mitchell Kim (Gold Coast) and Dr Erfan Rahbar (Adelaide), have been trained in the BodyJet fat grafting technique, by German specialist plastic surgeons Dr Klaus Ueberreiter and Dr Harmut Meyer. Both doctors travelled from Germany to spend time at Cosmos Aesthetics, teaching our doctors the safest and best way to prepare and inject fat into the breast.

Further training was undertaken at the Miami Breast Centre in Florida USA, with specialist plastic surgeon Dr Roger Khoury, using Vaser Lipo instead of BodyJet for the fat extraction method. At Cosmos Aesthetics we now use Vaser Liposuction for all our fat grafting procedures, including autologous fat transfer to the breasts.

When is a breast fat transfer a better option than breast implants?

Fat transfer to breasts is a cosmetic procedure which may be a suitable option for patients seeking a subtle breast enhancement, with a modest 1 to 1 ½ cup size increase. Patients who prefer a more natural look and breast shape, may find that transferring fat into the area fits their needs better than traditional silicone breast implants. Additional benefits of having a fat transfer to breast can include:

    • No unnatural materials used, or foreign bodies inserted into the breasts.
    • Vaser Lipo uses keyhole entry via small incision sites.
    • Body contouring and fat removal in the donor areas of the body.
    • More subtle and natural results versus traditional silicone implants.
    • No potential implant related illnesses or complications including capsular contraction.

When are breast implants a better option than a breast fat transfer?

Breast augmentation with silicone implants may be the better option for women who don’t have the excess fat required for transfer, who want cleavage and upper pole height, and who want a more noticeable and significant size increase in combination with the lifting benefit implants provide. Additional benefits of traditional silicone breast implant surgery can also include:

    • Backed by decades of research.
    • Suitable option for a wider range of patients.
    • Implants can be removed if required.
    • Multiple rounds of surgery are not normally needed to get the size increase desired.
    • Easier to predict the final results of the breast size that can potentially be achieved.
    • Breast implant surgery can be combined in the same procedure with a breast lift.

Will I have visible scars after my breast fat transfer?

All surgery will leave some form of scar. However, breast fat grafting with Vaser Lipo is performed through small keyhole incision sites in each of the areas of your body being treated leaving minimal scarring when compared to more invasive methods. The final appearance of any scars left from the incisions will vary depending on individual factors including past scarring.

How many fat transfers will I need?

When considering breast augmentation surgery with fat, you need to keep in mind that not all of the fat will survive the transfer process. In order to survive, the transferred fat will need to establish a new blood supply to the body and tissue. The retention rate of the fat cells extracted with Vaser Lipo and transferred into the breast, is an average 50% survival rate.

Depending on multiple factors, you may need multiple rounds of breast fat transfer surgery to achieve your desired result outcome. Patients wanting a significant increase in breast size, may need multiple rounds of surgery. Fat transfer procedures can be scheduled three to six months apart.

When will I see the final results after having surgery?

An initial increase in the size of your breasts can be noticed following surgery, this is mainly due to post-operative swelling. As the swelling subsides, your new breast shape and size will slowly begin to settle. You can expect your results to begin to appear around six weeks post-procedure, with the final results from having surgery with Vaser Lipo visible after around six months.

Is there an option to get implants and transfer fat at the same time?

A procedure that combines breast implants with breast fat grafting is known as a hybrid breast augmentation. This is not a procedure option we offer at Cosmos Aesthetics; it is a plastic surgery procedure performed by specialist plastic surgeons.

Can I get implants later on if I want more fullness?

Yes, you can have traditional silicone or saline breast implants inserted at a later date after a fat grafting breast augmentation.

How long will my fat transfer breast augmentation results last?

Following surgery, fat cell death is normal. Around six months post-procedure, the swelling will have settled, with the final results being mostly visible. We recommend that patients maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle after surgery, as weight fluctuations can interfere with the size and volume of your breasts.

If I don’t have much fat on my body, can I still get fat grafting?

If you don’t have enough fat to remove with Vaser Lipo, and gaining and maintaining a higher weight long-term is not an option, unfortunately you’re not a candidate to transfer fat into your breasts. You will need to consider treatments such as a traditional breast enlargement with implants.

Can I use someone else’s fat?

It’s important to understand that you cannot inject fat from another person into your own body. Your body will recognise it’s not your own fat, and immediately reject it leading to tissue death. Injecting another person’s fat can endanger your safety and cause serious health concerns.

Where can I have a consultation for breast fat grafting?

Both your initial consultations and breast fat grafting procedure can be done at any of our clinics located across Australia in: Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, and the Gold Coast. To discuss your breast enhancement treatment options at Cosmos Aesthetics, please contact us today!
