Dr Mitchell Kim Explains Breast Fat Transfer & BBL
Breast fat transfer augmentation procedure can increase, shape, and define your breasts using harvested fat from other parts of your body, such as your tummy, back, or thighs. With the aim to slightly enhance bust size, only the fat that is donated from the chosen parts of your body will be needed – no breast implants will be necessary. The breast fat transfer procedure is designed to leave you with fuller, symmetrical, and defined breasts.
If you are interested in undergoing a breast fat transfer procedure at Cosmos Clinic, we recommend thinking about your desired outcome of a breast augmentation procedure, and discussing your expectations with one of our doctors.
OUR GOLD COAST CLINIC
Cosmos Clinic 220 Ashmore Road. Benowa QLD 4217
Slightly fuller breasts are created by gently transferring fat to the breasts from chosen fat donor sites of the body
The doctors at Cosmos Clinic are leaders in liposuction, and are highly experienced in performing breast fat transfer augmentation procedures. On the day of your surgery, twilight sedation will be sufficiently used, however, you can opt for general anaesthesia if preferred.
The advanced and powerful Vaser liposuction technology is used at all our clinics, and is known for being gentler than traditional liposuction. The procedure works by removing the fat from the area of your choice, such as thighs, tummy, flanks or back, using Vaser liposuction technology, before separating the health fat cells and purifying the harvested fat. The fat is then transferred to the breasts, to create symmetrical, slightly fuller, and defined breasts. With Vaser technology, about 80% of the fat cells are likely to survive the transfer into the breast tissue, while less than 50% of fat cells tend to survive the transfer when using other types of liposuction technology.
Your doctor can enlarge the bust size by one or two cup sizes, but if you’d like to increase your breasts more, you can receive multiple breast fat transfer procedures that are performed three to six months apart.

What to expect during recovery from breast fat transfer surgery
Your doctor will provide you with a detailed recovery plan that you can closely follow to ensure that you recover well. Most patients can go home after their breast fat transfer procedure, and can already see that their breasts look slightly larger – possibly even a bit bigger than originally expected, however, this may be due to swelling and the fact that only about 80% of the transferred fat cells will survive. With this in mind, your doctor can inject extra fat to your breasts to create a fuller result.
You can expect to feel some pain and discomfort after your breast fat transfer procedure, but your doctor can prescribe you some pain medication to help you manage this. If you notice some fluid seepage at your incision points, be assured that this is normal, and should subside after a few days. Swelling will reduce within the weeks after your surgery, which will allow you to start to see your new breast shape.
During your recovery, you will need to wear a post-operative bra will help to support your breasts, and avoid regular bras that contain underwire for about six weeks. In addition, you’ll need to wear a compression garment over your liposuction areas for about three weeks full time, and then three weeks part-time.
You’ll need to avoid any strenuous exercise and overhead or heavy lifting for about a month, but you should be able to return to work or your normal daily routine within two to five days after surgery.
Risks and complications of fat transfer breast augmentation
Although breast fat transfer is considered a more natural breast augmentation than other procedures, it will still pose some risks and possible complications. Side effects may include:
Aching, pain or swelling
Bruising, bleeding, or infection
Skin sensation changes
Death of fat cells (fat necrosis)
The chance that revision surgery will be needed to address complications
During your consultation, feel free to ask your doctor any questions that you may have or discuss any concerns relating to the risks and complications of fat transfer breast augmentation surgery.
Breast fat transfer augmentation benefits
The breast fat transfer procedure is often regarded as a more natural breast augmentation, as it does not involve the insertion of breast implants.
Get natural-looking results: With a slight breast enhancement of around one to two cup sizes and a natural lift, your results will be more subtle than the outcome of breast augmentation procedures that require implants.
Reshape other areas of your body at the same time: When fat is donated to the breasts from chosen areas such as the thighs, abdomen, and hips, the liposuction can help to sculpt the specific areas.
Receive a less invasive procedure: Vaser liposuction and fat injections only need tiny incisions, making the risk of noticeable scars rare. Breast fat transfer procedure is also linked with fewer risks, and required a shorter recovery time than other breast enhancement surgeries.
How to prepare for breast fat transfer surgery
Your doctor will instruct you on how to prepare for your breast fat transfer augmentation procedure during your initial consultation, but in the meantime, some advice to follow as a guide can be:
Buy comfortable and loose clothing that you can wear after your surgery
Quit smoking at least two weeks prior to surgery, as smoking can delay healing and increase the risk of surgical complications
Avoid particular medications that could increase the risk of excessive bleeding during and after your procedure
Fill any required prescriptions that you will need
Make sure you prepare some healthy meals
Arrange for someone to pick you up from the hospital and, if possible, to help with tasks at home for the first few days after your procedure
Your breast fat transfer results
After a few weeks post-procedure, any swelling should have reduced, and you can start to see your new breasts. You will be able to see the results clearly at around six to eight weeks after surgery, and final results within six months. To achieve your desired results, you might need up to three or four fat transfers, but we use advanced techniques at Cosmos Clinic that ensure a fat survival rate of over 80 percent, so that one procedure will be as effective as possible. It is important to note that results will vary from person to person, and will be dependent on your individual needs and goals.
What makes me a good candidate for breast fat transfer augmentation?
If your goal is to achieve slightly fuller breasts with more definition and a natural lift, you may be suitable for a breast fat transfer augmentation. Other criteria that can determine if you are a good candidate for breast fat transfer can include:
Physically and mentally healthy
At a stable and healthy weight
Firm and elastic skin
Unsuitable for breast implants
Non-smoker (or willing to quit before and after surgery)
Realistic expectations as to what breast fat transfer can achieve
No blood circulation issues
Enough fat stores available on the other areas of the body to transfer to the breasts
To accurately ensure that a breast fat transfer procedure is right for you, we recommend booking a consultation with one of our doctors to discuss your individual factors and goals.
Will I have scars after breast fat transfer augmentation?
Scarring is quite rare, but if it does occur, breast fat transfer only requires small incisions to perform liposuction and inject fat into the breasts, and these incisions will be placed in discreet areas that can be easily hidden.
If I want fuller breasts after my breast fat transfer procedure, can I receive additional procedures?
You may be able to have multiple breast fat transfer procedures if you want to create fuller breasts, but they will need to be performed about three to six months apart.
Are breast fat transfer results long-lasting?
The fat that survives will stay in your breasts permanently, but as you are healing, your immediate results will appear bigger due to swelling and the appearance of fat cells that may not survive. Within about six months after your procedure, you can see your final results, which are permanent, however, fluctuations in weight after the procedure can slightly change the size of your breasts. Following a healthy diet and exercise routine will help you maintain your final results.
Can I have multiple breast fat transfer augmentation procedures to make my breasts bigger?
If you are unsatisfied with your results after your first breast fat transfer augmentation procedure, you may be able to have multiple procedures in order to create fuller breasts, performed three to six months apart.
Does fat transfer to the breasts increase breast cancer risk?
The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) has stated that fat injected into the breasts will not make it harder for radiologists to detect breast cancer if you go for a mammogram, and that fat transfer procedures carry the same risks as other breast augmentation methods. If you do go for a mammogram, we advise that you notify your radiologist that you have undergone a breast fat transfer procedure, so that they are aware that they will need to look out for any calcification that has occurred as a result of your procedure, and can determine the difference between this and the appearance of breast cancer. The fat transfer method has been widely accepted internationally for many years, and is often seen as a more natural breast augmentation method than others, as it will only need to use the fat that is already present in your body.
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure time is reliant on factors that will vary from person to person, such as the amount of fat that will need to be transferred to achieve the desired outcome. Generally, patients can expect to be in the operating theatre for about two to four hours.
