Cost of Liposuction

With liposuction being such a popular cosmetic procedure both in Australia and across the world, you may wonder why it can be challenging finding prices online. The Medical Board of Australia sets guidelines for all surgical procedures, including cosmetic surgery, and with a dedicated focus on performing liposuction surgery, we support these guidelines. The regulations around pricing are relevant as the cost of liposuction always varies from patient to patient, and thus providing an exact price online is impossible.

How do I find the cost of liposuction surgery?

We understand that the price of cosmetic surgery including the cost of liposuction is an element prospective patients can consider in their decision-making process. If you are contemplating having liposuction surgery, you may be wondering how much a liposuction procedure can cost?

Here is our guide to navigating the cost of liposuction at Cosmos Aesthetics…

Where can I receive a quote for liposuction?

For patients considering liposuction at Cosmos Aesthetics, we have clinics conveniently located around Australia in: Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, and the Gold Coast. To enquire if you might be a good candidate for liposuction surgery, and to receive an exact quote, please call us on 1300 138 797 or email an enquiry via our contact form today!

Does private health insurance or Medicare cover any of the costs of liposuction?

As a general rule, medical rebates provided by Medicare and private health insurance in Australia, are usually only applicable for medically necessary, non-elective, surgical procedures. Liposuction is most often classed as an elective surgical procedure for cosmetic reasons, and as such, will not be covered. However, we always recommend enquiring with your individual private health insurer to confirm if any level of cover may potentially apply.

Are the prices provided in Australian dollars?

All prices, costs, and fees charged by Cosmos Aesthetics, are in Australian dollars ($AUD).

What are some of the costs of liposuction?

The total cost of a Vaser Liposuction procedure can be broken down into a number of relevant components. At Cosmos Aesthetics, our procedure prices are calculated using a combination of:

  • Consultation Fees

Per the Australian Medical Guidelines, it is mandatory to attend two consultations before deciding to have a procedure. At Cosmos Aesthetics, the cost of these consultation with a doctor starts from a minimum $200 fee that will vary depending on the clinic location.

  • Doctor Fees

This is the fee charged by your liposuction doctor to perform your liposuction procedure. Your chosen doctor will provide you with a detailed breakdown of the costs used to calculate your exact quote during your initial consultations.

In most instances, the doctor’s fees are also sometimes referred to as the procedure costs. This fee is calculated using the cost of the procedure, as per the unique needs of each individual patient. It is important to remember that the cost of the procedure will always start from a base price for the first area, with each additional area usually costing a smaller fee (depending on the size).

The fees a doctor charges including the minimum starting cost for the base price of the first area, and the minimum starting cost of each additional area, will also vary, and will depend on the specific liposuction doctor you choose to have surgery with. The liposuction base prices and additional area prices, can range widely due to a number of influences not related to the patient, including, to reflect the doctor’s current liposuction focus, popularity, professional qualifications and experience.

  • Anaesthetic Fees

Your anaesthetist fees will vary depending on factors such as the complexity of your case, the length of time needed for your surgery, and the level of IV sedation and type of anaesthesia being used. The anaesthetist may charge an hourly rate starting from an average $750AUD per hour, or alternatively, they may just charge a single flat rate fee for your whole surgery regardless of how long it takes. The anaesthetist fees applicable to your individual case, as well as the cost of your IV sedation and anaesthesia, will be discussed during the initial consultations and detailed in your personalised quote.

  • Hospital Fees

All liposuction procedures at Cosmos Aesthetics are performed in fully licensed and accredited day surgery hospitals. If applicable to your individual procedure, any additional hospital fees will be disclosed and discussed during your initial consultations, and included as a fee in your total cost breakdown.

  • Compression Garment Fees

To achieve optimal results, liposuction patients are all required to wear compression garments. How long you will need to wear the garments, and how much your compression garments cost, will be discussed during the initial consultations and detailed in your personalised quote.

  • Follow Up Fees

After having a cosmetic procedure, the recovery time period following surgery is an essential component of your liposuction journey. Depending on the clinic location where you have your surgery done, a set number of in-clinic massages will be included in the cost of your procedure. The number of follow up massages included in your procedure price and the discounted cost if you wish to have more, will be discussed during the initial consultations and detailed in your personalised quote.

How much does liposuction cost at Cosmos Aesthetics?

At Cosmos Aesthetics, there is no one-price-fits-all flat rate to have liposuction, and the total cost of the procedure varies from person to person. These prices can vary greatly depending on a range of elements, including but not limited to:

  • The size of the areas being treated.
  • The number of areas being treated.
  • The amount of fat being removed from each targeted area.
  • The complexity of each individual case.
  • The time needed in theatre and recovery.

The cost of our liposuction procedures start from a minimum base price of $5,500AUD for the first area, with any additional areas costing a smaller fee depending on the size, starting from a minimum $2,000AUD per area.

One treatment area would be both love handles, both inner thighs, or both outer thighs for example. The stomach (abdomen) is always classified as two separate areas: the lower abdomen is one area, and the upper abdomen is one area. For area examples, to just treat the love handles, is one area, and costs would start from a minimum base price of $5,500AUD depending on the size of the area. To treat the lower abdomen, upper abdomen, and the love handles is three areas, and pricing would start from a minimum starting cost of $9,500AUD depending on the size of each area.

All prices mentioned are to be used as a general guide only and are not intended to be considered an exact quote. During the initial consultations with the doctor, patients are provided with a comprehensive cost breakdown tailored to their individual procedure needs. This detailed and exact personalised quote is calculated incorporating all relevant costs for liposuction to the specified areas, anaesthetic fees, compression garments, and any applicable surgical fees.

What is Vaser Liposuction?

Tumescent liposuction is a fat removal procedure designed to reduce the number of fat cells, and to remove unwanted pockets of fat from specific areas of the body for suitable candidates.

Whilst there are different types of liposuction and liposuction techniques available, at Cosmos Aesthetics we perform all our liposuction surgeries and body contouring with fat transfer procedures using Vaser Liposuction technology.

Vaser Liposuction is an invasive surgical procedure, performed under IV sedation along with a local anaesthetic numbing solution in the targeted areas. The level of IV sedation patients receive is either twilight anaesthesia or general anaesthesia. During the initial consultations, the doctor will review your individual medical needs and discuss in detail if local anaesthesia + IV twilight anaesthesia or local anaesthesia + general anaesthetic will be used during your surgery.

The procedure involves making small incisions through which a specialised probe targets excess fat deposits, before a cannula is employed to extract these fat cells using suction technology. Vaser Liposuction uses heat-generating ultrasound technology to break apart and liquify unwanted fat cells, aiming to contour the body shape. However, individual results may vary.

What areas of the body can Vaser Liposuction treat?

For good candidates, with realistic expectation, liposuction can reduce the amount of body fat and remove stubborn fat deposits from suitable areas of the body. Each of the areas listed below are classified as one area of liposuction:

During your initial consultations at Cosmos Aesthetics, you will discuss the areas you are considering treating with the doctor, who will decide if they are suitable to be treated with liposuction.

What is one area of liposuction?

When calculating the cost to have surgery, a liposuction procedure is charged per area treated. One area of liposuction is the lower abdomen, the upper abdomen, or both love handles for example.

It is important to remember that the cost of the procedure will always start from a base price for the first area, with each additional area usually costing a smaller fee (depending on the size).

Who is a good candidate for surgery?

Suitability for liposuction is always determined by the doctors during the initial consultations. Additionally, not all patients who want to have a procedure are good candidates for liposuction. Some patients may require plastic surgery, for example an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) performed by a plastic surgeon. The examples below are just a guide and do not guarantee suitability:

  • If you have good physical and mental health.
  • If you have realistic expectations regarding liposuction results and what surgery might achieve for you.
  • If you have good skin elasticity and tone.
  • If you don’t have excess loose skin in the treated areas.
  • If you understand that liposuction results vary.
  • If you understand the recovery time needed after liposuction varies depending on the individual and areas of the body treated.
  • If you understand that liposuction is not a weight loss treatment.
  • If you understand that liposuction is surgery, and all surgery has risks, side effects, and potential complications.
