Cost of Liposuction

If you are considering liposuction, you may be wondering how much the procedure will set you back. However, this isn’t a simple question to answer, as there are a number of factors that could play a role in the cost of your liposuction surgery. Here is our guide to the cost of liposuction at Cosmos Clinic.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is designed to improve the contours and proportion of the body by removing excess pockets of fat. This is done through small incisions made in the target area, through which a cannula is inserted to suction out the fat cells. In particular, liposuction is ideal for removing those stubborn deposits that don’t seem to shift with exercise and diet in areas such as the abdomen, hips, buttocks and thighs. Liposuction can also target excess breast tissue in both men and women.

Liposuction is regarded as a “minimally invasive” procedure, as it can be performed under local anaesthesia and only requires a few days of recovery. In fact, liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures worldwide, and estimates suggest that liposuction accounts for up to a quarter of all cosmetic surgeries performed in Australia.

Why is it so hard to find the cost of cosmetic surgery?

Since liposuction is such a popular cosmetic procedure both in Australia and across the world, you may wonder why it is so difficult to find price information online. Oftentimes, the only way to find the exact cost of a procedure is to visit a surgeon for a consultation. This is because the Medical Board of Australia has strict regulations regarding how surgical procedures can be marketed, specifically when it comes to costs. As cosmetic surgeons, we are bound by these guidelines, which prohibit us from advertisements that contain inaccurate price information.

A big part of this is that the cost of liposuction can differ dramatically from patient to patient. As such, it can be very difficult for a surgeon to advertise an exact price. Instead, a one on one consultation with the patient is required to determine precisely how much the procedure will cost.

Breaking down the costs of liposuction

The total cost of a liposuction procedure can be broken up into a number of components. At Cosmos Clinic, our procedures are inclusive of:

  • Consultation fees
  • Surgeon’s fees
  • Anaesthetist’s fees
  • Hospital and theatre fees
  • Post-surgical follow-up visits

Initial consultation fees

When you first visit a cosmetic surgeon for a liposuction consultation, you will be charged an initial consultation fee. This fee covers the time your surgeon spends reviewing your health history, examining your body, taking pre-operative photos and assessing your eligibility for liposuction surgery. Consultation fees can vary widely from surgeon to surgeon. At Cosmos Clinic, you can expect your consultation fees to cost between $150 AUD and $220 AUD, depending on which surgeon you see.

Surgeon’s fees

This is the fee charged by your liposuction surgeon to perform the procedure. Your chosen surgeon should provide you with a detailed breakdown of costs during your initial consultation, however, you can expect it to vary based on factors such as:

  • The area/s of the body treated.
  • The number of areas you wish to target.
  • The amount of time spent in theatre required to achieve your desired results.
  • The difficulty of your individual procedure.

Your surgeon’s fee will typically be inclusive of the entire procedure cost, including pre-operative and post-operative care. If this is the case, you will not need to pay extra for follow-up visits, although you should ensure to double-check this with your surgeon.

Of course, your surgeon’s fees will also depend on the specific liposuction surgeon you choose. Liposuction costs can vary widely to reflect the surgeon’s liposuction expertise, professional qualifications, experience, popularity and professional recognition.

Please keep in mind that there are several doctors around Australia who offer liposuction at a discounted price, despite not being qualified to perform surgery. For your safety, you should ensure that you choose a surgeon with the appropriate qualifications and accreditations. If you feel at all unsure about your choice of surgeon, please reconsider your decision.

At Cosmos Clinic, we specialise in liposuction procedures, and our surgeons have over 50 years of collective experience. You can trust that we have the expertise and patient care required to sculpt your goal physique.

Anaesthetist’s fees

At Cosmos Clinic, most of our liposuction procedures are performed under local anaesthetic and sedation. However, for more extensive liposuction procedures, you may require a general anaesthetic. You can also opt for general anaesthesia if that would make you feel more comfortable. If you do decide to proceed with liposuction under a general anaesthetic, you will need to pay for anaesthetist fees.

Your anaesthetist fees will also depend on the qualifications of your anaesthetist. For example, a GP who attends you as an anaesthetist will charge much less than a specialist anaesthetist performing the same duty. As with most other professional medical specialists, anaesthetists do not have a standard scale of fees. Instead, your anaesthetist fees will depend on factors such as the length of your procedure and the amount of anaesthesia required.

At Cosmos Clinic, we only work alongside highly qualified anaesthetists. After all, the anaesthetist who attends to you during your liposuction procedure keeps guard of your life and vital functions during the process. As such, you want a qualified professional who is familiar with all things anaesthesia, including potential risks and troubleshooting in the case of complications. In addition to keeping you safe, your anaesthetist also plays a huge role in ensuring your comfort during the procedure.

For cosmetic procedures, such as liposuction, the hourly charge for an anaesthetist can be anywhere from $600 AUD to $800 AUD. Keep in mind that this is just a general guide, and you can expect your liposuction surgeon to give you a more specific quote during your consultation if you choose to opt for general anaesthesia.

Hospital & theatre costs

While our surgeons can remove small amounts of fat in a clinic setting, extensive liposuction procedures should be performed in a hospital. Your hospital and theatre fees can vary widely, depending on where you are located and the hospital you visit. This is because your Cosmos Clinic surgeon and anaesthetist are considered independent contractors who simply utilise the facilities of private hospitals. When considering liposuction, ensure you choose a surgeon who operates in accredited facilities with high standards and well-trained staff.

Most hospitals and day surgeries charge an hourly rate, which will cover theatre fees, accommodation (if required) and sundries. As a general rule, the more areas you choose to treat with liposuction, the longer the procedure will take, and the more your liposuction will cost. Additionally, some areas, such as the front of the thighs, are more difficult to treat and will thus take longer.

You can expect hospital fees to start at around $750 AUD, although this can vary significantly. Again, once you have had a consultation with your surgeon and agreed on the specific areas to be treated, you will be given a more specific outline of what your hospital fees will be.

For the most part, liposuction is performed as a day procedure, with no need for an overnight stay. As such, your hospital fee quote will comprise of the hours spent in the actual operating theatre, as well as any time required to recover from anaesthesia if you’d opted for general anaesthesia or sedation. If for whatever reason, an overnight stay is required, that cost will be additional.

Post-surgical follow up visits and garments

Your liposuction costs don’t necessarily end once you’ve left the operating theatre. You will need to revisit the clinic for post-operative follow-up visits, usually at six weeks after surgery. At this appointment, your Cosmos Clinic surgeon will review your surgical progress and take post-surgical photographs. Your post-operative visits are included in your procedure fee at most cosmetic surgery practices, meaning that no additional costs are required.

However, at Cosmos Clinic, we often recommend that our patients visit the clinic for post-operative lymphatic massages, which help to reduce swelling and improve aesthetic results. Our onsite physiotherapist or nurse will perform these massages, and you may require two to four treatments over a two week period. Your post-operative lymphatic massages are another cost to consider.

To achieve optimal results, liposuction patients are also required to wear a compression garment after their procedure. The length of time that you will need to wear these garments depends on the treatment area, although it is usually between three and six weeks. Again, most cosmetic surgery clinics will include the costs of your compression garments in your procedure fee.

The role of time in liposuction costs

As both your anaesthetist fees and hospital fees are charged by the hour, it is clear that time plays a significant role in the price of your liposuction procedure. However, keep in mind that liposuction can be a time-consuming procedure. Depending on the specific areas treated, your liposuction surgery can take anywhere between one and five hours to complete.

In addition, you should keep in mind that your liposuction surgeon can only remove so much fat during a single procedure. To ensure patient safety, any reputable surgeon will adhere to the guidelines that suggest a maximum extraction limit of five litres, regardless of weight and body fat percentage. Removing any more than this could compromise your health and safety. In fact, one study found that removing more than five litres increased complication rates by 3.7 percent.

At Cosmos Clinic, we offer Mega Liposuction procedures, which are designed for overweight patients and can remove up to 15 litres of fat. If you are interested in this procedure, keep in mind that you will need to undergo between two and three sessions to achieve your desired result. As you are having multiple procedures, you will need to pay anaesthetist and hospital fees each time you undergo surgery, which can become quite costly.

How much does liposuction cost at Cosmos Clinic?

At Cosmos Clinic, we charge a base price for one area of liposuction with an additional cost for each additional area. The cost of this base price will depend on quite a few variables, such as:

  • What method of liposuction is used: At Cosmos Clinic, we specialise in Vaser Liposuction, a newer development that uses ultrasound energy to dissolve and liquefy fat cells. We also offer Vaser Hi Definition Liposuction, which sculpts the body for a more athletic, muscular appearance. Our Vaser Liposuction base price starts from $4,000 AUD. Vaser Hi Definition Liposuction starts at $10,000 AUD.
  • The number of areas being treated: Treating more than one area at the same time will save on anaesthesia and theatre costs, although it will increase your surgeon’s fees. At Cosmos Clinic, we charge on average $1,750 AUD for each additional area treated.
  • The amount of fat to be removed: As a general rule, the more fat that is removed, the longer the surgery will take. Given this, patients who require more fat removal can expect higher costs.
  • Whether or not the fat is fibrous: Fibrous fat requires more time to remove and will subsequently increase the price of your procedure. Fibrous fat is often found in gynecomastia (man boob) patients and people who have had liposuction previously.
  • The area to be treated. Some areas are more difficult to treat, such as the calves, ankles and front of thighs. Due to the extra time required to operate on these areas, starting costs increase to $6,600 AUD.

What is an area of liposuction?

Liposuction can remove unwanted fat deposits from various areas of the body. When pricing the procedure, liposuction costs are charged by area treated. Some of the common areas requested for liposuction at Cosmos Clinic include:

  • Face and cheeks
  • Neck and jawline
  • Male breasts (Gynecomastia)
  • Female breasts
  • Abdomen (upper and lower)
  • Flanks (love handles)
  • Back (upper and lower)
  • Arms
  • Inner thighs
  • Outer thighs
  • Front of the thighs
  • Knees
  • Calves
  • Ankles
  • Buttocks
  • Banana roll

Each of the above would be considered as one area of liposuction.

Vaser Liposuction

Our Vaser Liposuction procedures start from $4,400 AUD. If you choose to treat multiple areas, we charge between $1,750 AUD and $2,500 AUD for each additional area, depending on the size.

For example, if you choose to treat two areas, you can expect your Vaser liposuction procedure to cost between $6,150 AUD and $6,900 AUD. If you wish to treat three areas, your procedure will likely cost anywhere between $7,900 AUD and $9,400 AUD.

Vaser Hi Definition Liposuction

Our Vaser Hi Def Liposuction procedures start from $7,000 AUD. Again, if you choose to address multiple areas in one treatment, we charge an average of $2,000 AUD per additional area, depending on the size.

As an example, if you choose to treat two areas, you can expect your Vaser Hi Definition procedure to cost approximately $9,000 AUD. If you wish to treat three areas, your procedure will cost around $11,000 AUD.

Keep in mind that these costs are only estimates and your final price can vary widely depending on numerous factors. If you opt for general anaesthesia, or if your procedure needs to be performed in a hospital setting, you can expect your costs to rise considerably.

Will Medicare or insurance cover the costs of my liposuction procedure?

As a general rule, medical reimbursements, such as Medicare and private health insurance, will only cover the cost of medically necessary procedures. Liposuction is usually considered a purely cosmetic treatment and, as such, will not be covered.

Whether your private insurance fund covers the costs of liposuction will depend on the specific policy you pay for. In some cases, your policy may cover some of your hospital fees. Anything that your insurance does not reimburse will be an out-of-pocket expense. Be sure to clarify with your insurance fund what they will and won’t cover before having surgery.

In some cases, there may be exceptional circumstances that could allow you to make a claim on your liposuction procedure. For example, our mega liposuction procedures can remove up to 15 litres of fat and may be seen as a health requirement for patients who are morbidly obese. If you think you may qualify for a special case, we recommend speaking to your private health insurer.

Why choose Cosmos Clinic?

It is important to choose a surgeon with extensive experience in liposuction procedures and understand that the cheapest deal is not always the best deal. A poorly performed liposuction can be riddled with complications, and the saving will not be worth the aftermath.

At Cosmos Clinic, our surgeons have performed over 15,000 liposuction procedures in the last ten years and are experts in the field. If you’d like more information on how much your liposuction procedure may cost, please contact us today!
