    THE PROCEDURE

Effective wrinkle reduction in 30 minutes or less

Wrinkle reduction works by blocking the impulses from the nerves that control muscle movement. When injected into the muscle tissue, a wrinkle reduction treatment will cause muscle relaxation after about three days, so that the muscles cannot contract and create the appearance of wrinkles. This creates a smooth and rejuvenated appearance of the overlying skin that can last anywhere from three to eight months.

In general, wrinkle reduction is a well tolerated treatment that requires around five to ten tiny injections per area with a very fine needle. When used for the treatment of dynamic facial lines, the effect will typically last for about three months.

The most commonly treated areas include:

    • Frown lines or worry lines between the eyebrows
    • “Surprise” or forehead lines (expression lines)
    • Bunny lines (lines along the side of the nose)
    • Crows feet or “laugh lines”
    • Eyebrow lift

In these areas, excessive contraction of the muscles below the skin causes skin to wrinkle and eventually crease. The facial expressions caused by these particular muscle actions are generally undesirable for the patient. Crease lines on the skin that do not disappear when stretched out will be improved, but not completely removed by wrinkle reduction and may need treatment by other methods such as Volume Enhancement and/or Collagen Stimulators.

Wrinkle reduction treatments can also be used for:

    • Excessive sweating: To reduce sweating in areas such as the underarms, hands, and feet.
    • Wrinkles around the mouth, such as depressed corners of the mouth: Targeting the small muscles that are present around the mouth, wrinkle relaxers can relax the muscles and create a smoother appearance.
    • Neck bands: To tighten the skin on the neck, this treatment can be used to minimise the muscle size and reduce the amount of visible wrinkles.
    • Bunny lines on the nose: To relax the muscles on the nose that cause the appearance of bunny lines, the lines seen when sniffing.
    • Chin Enhancement: To reduce the appearance of wrinkling that occurs when lips are moved and the chin is tensed.
    • Jaw line contouring: To reduce the size and strength of the masseters muscles to slim and elongate a square jaw shape.
    • Calf contouring: To slim and reduce the size of bulky calf muscles.
    • Migraines: By blocking nerve impulses that cause muscles to contract, it can relax the area, reducing pain that may be causing migraines or headaches in some patients.
    • Back and facial muscle spasms: Can reduce muscle spasms by blocking the nerve impulses that can the spasms to occur.

    Wrinkle reduction prices

Costs incurred always vary from patient to patient, as prices will be dependent on factors such as the areas being treated, the quantity of the product that needs to be used, and treatment time. The amount used will be measured by units and costs can be calculated by adding up the individual costs per unit. Depending on the treatment area, the average amount of units used per treatment is typically 10 to 20. The amount of wrinkle reduction that will be needed per patient will depend on how active the patient’s muscles are. To get a better idea of what your treatment costs will be, discuss your desired treatment areas and goals with a Cosmos Aesthetics doctor or nurse during your initial consultation.

A general guide to starting prices per treatment area:

    • Forehead wrinkles prices start from $165 – $200
    • Frown lines prices start from $200 – $400
    • Around the eyes prices start from $200 – $400
    • Brow lift prices start from $165 – $200
    • Initial consultation is between $120 – $200, redeemable upon treatment

    POST TREATMENT

    Things to know

Wrinkle reduction treatments usually cause muscle relaxation in the injected area after around three to five days. The full effects may not be seen for two weeks; however, this may vary from patient to patient. Cosmos Aesthetics encourages all patients to return for their complimentary follow-up appointment after two weeks.

Patients may notice some small red bumps on the treatment area, but this should subside within 15 to 30 minutes. Minor bruising may also be present and should fade within a few days to one week. Patients may experience headaches for a short amount of time after treatment, however, many patients notice that the muscle relaxing nature of the wrinkle removal treatment generally improves their headache symptoms in the long term. Wrinkle relaxers can actually be used to specifically improve migraine symptoms.

After the treatment, vigorous rubbing of the injected areas should be avoided for at least eight hours. Exposure to extreme heat, such as saunas, should be avoided for the first few days after treatment and it is important to keep the treatment areas clean. Contrary to what was formerly thought, the position of the patient during or after a properly performed wrinkle reduction treatment, does not influence the area or the intensity of the effect. However, we do encourage you to move the muscles in the treated area in the first few hours after the treatment to action and onset the results. You will be given detailed recovery instructions at your appointment tailored to your individual treatment so that you can effectively care for the treated areas.

Wrinkle reduction can last from three to eight months. Patients need to keep in mind that the goal is to minimise the appearance of lines caused by movement to create natural looking results, not to have a “frozen face,” or to keep the injected muscles paralysed. Experience with thousands of patients has shown that the vast majority using wrinkle relaxers on a regular basis will need treatments two or three times a year to maintain the improvement.

    Who are suitable candidates

A consultation at one of our Cosmos Aesthetics locations in Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, or on the Gold Coast, will be the best way to determine if you are a suitable candidate to receive a wrinkle reduction treatment. Generally, good candidates are patients that would like to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and creases that are caused by underlying muscles beneath the skin. Patients should be in good physical health and have realistic expectations for treatment results. All skin types and colours are suitable for wrinkle treatment.

However, some patients may not be particularly suited to this type of treatment. This may be due to factors such as having any active skin infections or known allergies to the product. Patients with neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis, or nerve conditions such as ALS, should not be treated with relaxers. Whilst no side effects from wrinkle reduction treatments have been reported in pregnant women or breastfeeding mothers, safety during pregnancy or breastfeeding has not been firmly established. We recommend consulting with your doctor or specialist before receiving wrinkle removal treatment to ensure that the procedure is a suitable option for you.

    Possible side effects or complications

After treatment, some bruising, swelling, or redness may develop, but most symptoms will subside within a few hours to one week after the procedure. Wrinkle reduction treatments are quite effective with the vast majority of patients experiencing no complications. It is not absorbed by the blood stream and only affects the muscles injected. Wrinkle relaxers are typically processed by the body within a few days. The effects on nerve impulses to the muscles generally last for three to four months, though this can vary. No serious or long-term health hazards have been attributed, even after years of use and millions of injections. However, some mild transient side effects can occur. These may include:

    • Mild swelling or redness at the injection site, which will settle within a few hours.
    • Bruising at the injection site can occur but is not common. This can be avoided by the application of ice packs prior to the injection and by carefully inspecting the area to be injected for blood vessels. The bruising should settle in two days to one week and can be covered with makeup. Smile lines are an area typically affected by bruising.
    • Occasionally, the injected muscles will not be weakened enough and touch up injections will be needed for correction after two weeks.
    • Drooping of the upper eyelid, which can last up to three weeks, is rare. This may be treated with eye drops until it resolves by itself, typically after a few days.
    • Drooping of the forehead can occur if too much wrinkle relaxer is injected into this area. This can be prevented by making sure that you choose an experienced clinic with highly trained doctors and nurses for your procedure.

    What are wrinkle relaxers?

Wrinkle relaxers are a natural, purified protein that relaxes wrinkle-causing muscles, creating a smoothed and improved appearance. Wrinkle relaxers are produced by a bacterium, and it was first used in humans for the treatment of strabismus (crossed eyes) in 1978. It is  now used to treat a number of medical conditions including cerebral palsy, migraines, excessive sweating, wry neck, back and facial muscle spasms as well as the treatment of facial wrinkles. Wrinkle reduction injections are the only medical product of its type with more than thirty years of safe usage involving millions of patients worldwide, comprehensive clinical trials, published studies and extensive clinical practice.

Wrinkle reduction treatments are one of the most widely researched medicines in the world with twenty approved indications in more than seventy-five countries. Wrinkle relaxers are a simple, quick, and minimally invasive treatment that delivers fast and visible results.

Why do wrinkles and lines appear?

Frown lines (wrinkles between the eyebrows), crow’s feet (wrinkles around the eyes) and forehead lines (wrinkles on the forehead) appear because of persistent small muscle contractions. Wrinkles that are caused by persistent small muscle contractions can be treated with Wrinkle Relaxers. Additionally, as the natural aging process occurs, the skin gradually produces less collagen and elastin over time. The lack of collagen and elastin can cause skin laxity, meaning that skin becomes less firm and tough as we age. Saggier skin above the muscles can also cause wrinkles and fine lines to appear more noticeable. Wrinkle reduction treatments allow collagen remodelling to occur, in order to repair the damaged collagen under the wrinkles.

How do wrinkle relaxers help to prevent lines from getting worse?

When muscles are treated with wrinkle relaxers, they will relax and weaken over time. This means that lines and wrinkles will not be as visible once the injection wears off. When the lines and wrinkles are relaxed, collagen remodelling repairs the damaged collagen beneath the wrinkle line and “fills in” those lines. This effect becomes more apparent with repeated injections and in many cases causes the lines to disappear with multiple treatments. Due to the muscle relaxing nature of the treatment, new wrinkles will not be formed in the area.

    Do wrinkle relaxers hurt?

The injections required for wrinkle treatment are very small and should not cause any pain. Some patients can feel a small pinching or pricking sensation, but this should be very mild and tolerable. Since wrinkle reduction treatments work by relaxing the muscles, treatment can actually help with pain, as opposed to cause it.

How soon should I schedule my second appointment to maintain my results?

Apart from your complimentary follow-up appointment two weeks after treatment, your next treatment should be scheduled about 12 to 16 weeks after your first treatment, depending on how fast you have noticed your wrinkle relaxing results begin to fade. When the results start to fade, wrinkles and lines should still be less noticeable than they were before treatment, and no new wrinkles should have formed.

How long does wrinkle reduction last?

Wrinkle reduction treatments causes muscle relaxation of the injected muscles, which can last from three to eight months. Experience with thousands of patients has shown that the vast majority using wrinkle relaxers on a regular basis will need treatments two or three times a year to maintain the improvement, or additional treatments about 12 to 16 weeks apart, depending on how quickly the results begin to subside per individual patient.
