• Certain diseases, such as chronic liver or kidney disease
• Certain medications
• Over-use of recreational drugs, such as alcohol, marijuana and anabolic steroids

While men of any age can develop gynecomastia, it is more common in adolescent teens and middle-aged men. Gynecomastia is actually relatively common, however, it is still a sensitive issue for many men. If you are deeply unhappy with the appearance of your chest, it may be time to consider gyno surgery.

Gynecomastia can be treated using liposuction, surgical excision or a combination of both. At Cosmos Aesthetics, we perform all of our male breast reductions using liposuction techniques.

Liposuction is the best choice when gynecomastia is the result of excess fatty tissue. During the procedure, your doctor will inject fluid into the breast tissue before inserting a cannula through a small incision. The cannula is moved back and forth to dislodge the excess fat, which is then removed from the body via vacuum suction.

However, if excess skin needs to be removed or the areola and nipple need to be reduced or repositioned, we may refer you to a doctor who performs surgical excision. This procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and usually requires an incision around the nipple.

VASER, or Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance, is the latest innovation in surgical liposuction. This technique uses sound wave energy to dissolve and liquefy fat cells, making them easier to remove from the body with less disruption than traditional liposuction.

No matter the technique, liposuction always follows the same premise: fat deposits are broken up and vacuumed out of the body using anaesthesia, saline solution and a cannula. Vaser differs from other liposuction methods in that it uses ultrasound energy waves to generate heat, which works to efficiently break apart fat cells for easy removal from the body and tightens the skin.1

During your gynecomastia consultation, you will be given specific pre-operative instructions by your doctor. If you are a smoker, you must stop at least two weeks before surgery, as smoking can slow healing times and increase surgical complications. In addition, your doctor may advise that you avoid taking certain medications and supplements that could cause excessive bleeding during and after surgery.

We also suggest that you take steps before surgery to prepare for recovery. This may include purchasing some comfortable clothing, preparing some healthy meals, filling any prescriptions and arranging for someone to pick you up from the hospital and help with tasks at home.

To know for sure, your doctor will need to examine you for a proper diagnosis. As a general rule, breast tissue has a firmer and denser consistency than fat. If your breasts are particularly large, you may have both breast and fat tissue. In any case, Vaser liposuction can remove excess fat and gland, restoring a more masculine appearance to the area.

While losing a significant amount of weight is a massive feat, it does change the body in many ways. Unfortunately, men who have experienced massive weight loss are often left with unwanted fat deposits that just don’t seem to shift, with the chest being a common problem area.

Such pockets of fat may cause you to be dissatisfied with your weight loss efforts and negatively impact your self-image. In these cases, a male breast reduction can help recontour the chest to achieve a firmer, more masculine appearance.

Many boys develop gynecomastia in their teens due to the hormonal fluctuations that occur during adolescence. Despite that, we usually recommend that patients wait until they have turned 18 to undergo surgery, as male breasts often resolve on their own after puberty.

The time spent in the operating theatre is dependent on the amount of fat and glandular tissue that your doctor needs to remove. Usually, you can expect your male breast reduction to take between one and three hours to complete.
