Some people are genetically predisposed to having more fat in their cheeks. It’s called buccal fat and those with too much of it can look chubby or younger than their age. These natural fat pads that sit just underneath the cheek hollows can be a constant annoyance and affect an individual’s self-confidence.
Even slim or athletic women and men can be afflicted with stubborn buccal fat that doesn’t respond to diet or exercise. Using Vaser liposuction, the buccal fat is removed in order to thin out the inner cheeks, resulting in a slimmer, more symmetrical face and more defined profile.
One of the biggest advantages of buccal fat removal is that results are permanent. It’s important to keep your weight steady, however, because excessive weight gain or loss can affect the final outcome of your procedure. Furthermore, the treatment is relatively quick – only 30 minutes – and can be performed at your doctor’s clinic using twilight sedation and local anesthesia.
Who is the best candidate for chubby cheeks (buccal fat) treatment?
Buccal fat removal is typically recommended for patients who are over 18 years of age. This ensures that the face is fully developed which carries less risk of complications in the long-term. The ideal candidate has a genetic predisposition for naturally soft and round cheeks and wants to reduce the amount of fat in this area.
How is the treatment performed?
Vaser liposuction involves making tiny incisions (usually under the earlobes) then injecting a tumescent solution which contains a local anaesthetic. This is followed by inserting a thin ultrasound-emitting probe to liquefy fat cells in the cheeks first before they are permanently suctioned away. Ultrasound energy has an added benefit of tightening the skin by stimulating the contraction of collagen fibers and production of firmer, healthier skin.
What to expect after the procedure
It’s normal to experience some swelling, bruising, soreness and burning sensations immediately after treatment. These symptoms are only temporary and should gradually subside over the next couple of weeks. Most people can resume their normal activities in 2-3 days: however, a full recovery and final results from cheek liposuction may require up to a month.
How much does the procedure cost?
Vaser Liposuction price starts from $4,400
Initial consultation is between $120 – $330
How long do the effects last?
Results from buccal fat removal are permanent. Once the fat cells have been removed they will not regenerate or grow back. Keep in mind that gaining or losing too much weight can change the appearance of fat deposit in other areas of the face and impact your overall appearance.
What are the possible risks of buccal fat liposuction?
Complications from buccal fat removal with Vaser liposuction are rare. As with any medical procedure, however, it’s possible to experience some side-effects such as infection, bleeding, poor healing or injury to facial nerves. Patients are advised to choose a qualified and experienced liposuction expert. Additionally, as long as all post-operative instructions are followed carefully, most people have a speedy and successful recovery.
Can I have other procedures alongside buccal fat removal?
Buccal fat removal is often performed with other treatments – both surgical and non-surgical. A complementary treatment is muscle relaxing injections to the masseters which can help achieve a slimmer jawline. It can also be done at the same time as a facelift, blepharoplasty, neck lift or chin augmentation.
