Puffy Nipples & Man Boobs: Causes and Treatment Options

October 3, 2026

Puffy nipples and what are colloquially called “man boobs” are both terms used to describe changes in the appearance of the male chest. While they can look similar, they are not always caused by the same thing.

For some men, chest fullness is mainly caused by excess fat. For others, enlarged glandular breast tissue, known as gynaecomastia, may be contributing. It is also possible to have a combination of both.

Understanding what is causing the appearance of your chest is important before looking at how to get rid of man boobs or considering a procedure.

What are puffy nipples?

Puffy nipples generally describe nipples or areolas that appear raised, swollen or more prominent from the surrounding chest.

The appearance can occur on one or both sides.

One possible cause is glandular breast tissue sitting beneath the nipple and areola. This can push the area forward and create the rounded or puffy appearance.

However, a puffy nipple does not automatically mean you have gynaecomastia. Chest fat, individual anatomy and other factors can also affect the appearance of the nipple and areola.

What causes puffy nipples in men?

There are several possible causes of puffy nipples in men.

Gynaecomastia

Gynaecomastia is the enlargement of male glandular breast tissue. When glandular tissue develops directly beneath the nipple, it can make the nipple and areola project further from the chest.

Hormonal changes are one factor that can contribute to gynaecomastia.

Excess chest fat

Fat can accumulate around the chest in the same way it can around the stomach, waist and other areas.

If the fullness is predominantly caused by fat rather than enlarged breast tissue, it may be described as pseudogynaecomastia.

Puberty

Hormonal changes during puberty can cause temporary breast tissue enlargement in boys and young men.

In many cases, this can resolve over time without surgical treatment.

Medications and health conditions

Certain medications and medical conditions can contribute to gynaecomastia.

If chest enlargement develops unexpectedly, is painful or is accompanied by other symptoms, it should be medically assessed rather than assumed to be a cosmetic issue.

Are puffy nipples the same as gyno?

Not necessarily.

Gynaecomastia refers specifically to enlargement of glandular male breast tissue. Puffy nipples describe an appearance rather than a medical diagnosis.

Someone may have puffy nipples because glandular tissue is sitting beneath the nipple. Another person may have more general chest fullness caused predominantly by fat.

Some men have a combination of glandular tissue and excess fat.

If you want to understand how gynaecomastia is treated, our gynaecomastia treatment page explains what the procedure involves.

What causes man boobs?

“Man boobs” is an informal term used to describe an enlarged male chest.

There are two broad causes that are often confused.

The first is excess fatty tissue around the chest. This can be associated with overall body fat, genetics and where your body naturally tends to store fat.

The second is gynaecomastia, where glandular breast tissue has enlarged.

You can also have both at the same time.

This distinction matters because the appropriate approach to treatment depends on what type of tissue is causing the chest enlargement.

How to get rid of man boobs

If you are researching how to get rid of man boobs, the first step is identifying the cause.

Where excess body fat is contributing to chest fullness, gradual weight loss through nutrition and regular physical activity may reduce the amount of fat around the chest.

However, you cannot choose where your body loses fat first. Chest exercises can strengthen the pectoral muscles underneath the tissue, but they cannot specifically remove fat from the chest.

Weight loss also does not necessarily remove glandular breast tissue associated with gynaecomastia.

If the chest remains enlarged despite changes in body weight, a medical assessment can help determine whether fat, glandular tissue or both are contributing.

Can exercise get rid of man boobs?

Exercise can help reduce overall body fat when combined with appropriate nutrition and can strengthen the muscles of the chest.

What it cannot do is selectively burn fat from one specific area.

Exercises such as push-ups, bench presses and chest flies work the pectoral muscles. Building these muscles can change the appearance of the chest, but it does not directly remove glandular breast tissue or specifically target chest fat.

If overall body fat is contributing to the problem, reducing body fat may reduce chest fullness.

Persistent glandular tissue requires a different assessment.

Can weight loss get rid of puffy nipples?

It depends on what is causing them. If excess fatty tissue is contributing to the appearance of the chest, weight loss may reduce some of the fullness.

If the puffiness is caused primarily by glandular breast tissue underneath the nipple, weight loss may have less effect on that tissue.

In some cases, losing body fat can actually make the difference between the surrounding chest and glandular tissue more noticeable.

This is why it can be difficult to determine the cause based on appearance alone.

When should puffy nipples be medically assessed?

If you have persistent changes to the chest or nipples, a medical assessment can help determine the cause.

You should also seek medical advice if you notice changes such as a new lump, nipple discharge, significant pain, skin changes or a sudden change affecting one side of the chest.

These symptoms should not simply be assumed to be gynaecomastia or excess fat.

A medical practitioner can assess the chest and determine whether further investigation is required.

What treatments are available for puffy nipples?

Treatment depends on the cause and whether treatment is required at all.

If the appearance is related to a temporary hormonal change, treatment may not be necessary.

If excess body fat is contributing, changes to nutrition, physical activity and overall weight may reduce chest fullness.

Where localised fat remains, liposuction may be considered in suitable patients.

Where glandular tissue is contributing to persistent gynaecomastia, a different surgical approach may be required depending on the amount and type of tissue present.

Cosmos Clinic offers gynaecomastia treatment for suitable patients following an individual medical assessment.

Can liposuction get rid of man boobs?

Liposuction may be an option when localised fatty tissue is contributing to the appearance of the male chest.

At Cosmos Clinic, VASER Liposuction for men uses ultrasound energy to assist in breaking down targeted fat before it is removed through a cannula.

However, liposuction is not necessarily the appropriate treatment for every enlarged male chest.

If significant glandular tissue is present, removing fat alone may not address the underlying cause of the chest enlargement.

Our guide to VASER lipo for men vs traditional liposuction explains how VASER technology differs from traditional liposuction and the areas that may be treated in men.

What does gyno surgery involve?

The procedure used for gynaecomastia depends on the tissue that needs to be treated.

At Cosmos Clinic, gynaecomastia treatment may involve VASER Liposuction in suitable patients.

VASER uses ultrasound energy to assist in treating targeted fatty tissue before it is removed using a cannula.

Where glandular tissue or another concern is contributing to the chest enlargement, the treatment required may differ.

For more detail on what the procedure involves, read about gynaecomastia treatment at Cosmos.

What about puffy nipple surgery?

There is no single procedure officially called puffy nipple surgery.

If glandular tissue beneath the nipple is causing the appearance, treatment may involve addressing that tissue. If excess fat is the main cause, liposuction may be considered instead.

Some people have both glandular tissue and excess fat, which can require a different treatment approach.

An individual assessment is therefore important before deciding that surgery is appropriate.

How much does treatment cost?

The cost depends on what is causing the chest fullness and the procedure required.

Where gynaecomastia surgery is appropriate, treatment generally starts from around $6,000, while an average case may cost approximately $10,000 to $15,000.

These figures are a general guide rather than a quote. Costs can vary depending on the tissue being treated, procedure complexity, medical practitioner fees, anaesthesia and other associated costs.

Puffy nipples and man boobs before and after

Before and after images can help you understand the types of changes achieved in previous patients, but it is important to compare similar concerns.

Someone with predominantly excess chest fat may have a different treatment and outcome from someone with significant glandular breast tissue.

Cosmos Clinic provides gynaecomastia before and after examples from individual patients.

Results vary between individuals, and before and after photos cannot predict your own outcome.

What should you do if you are concerned about your chest?

If you have puffy nipples or an enlarged male chest, identifying the cause is more useful than assuming you need a particular procedure.

Excess fat, glandular breast tissue, hormonal changes and individual anatomy can all influence how the chest looks.

Lifestyle changes may help where overall body fat is contributing. Persistent glandular tissue or localised fat may require a different approach if treatment is desired.

An appropriately qualified medical practitioner can assess the area, explain what may be contributing to the appearance and discuss whether treatment is appropriate.

All surgical and invasive procedures carry risks. Results vary between individuals. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
