Commonly known as “Man Boobs”, it is more specifically known by the medical name Gynaecomastia. It can be the cause of great anxiety, affect confidence and may even cause social withdrawal from simple activities such as not wanting to go shirtless at the beach. Causes of Gynaecomastia
While males and females naturally have varying levels of both the hormones: male (testosterone) and female (oestrogen), man boobs typically occur when there is an imbalance between the hormones. Males with higher levels of oestrogen are more likely to develop man boobs. This hormonal imbalance is what causes the over-development of glandular tissue and consequently the deposition of excess fat in the breast area. In addition to that, breast tissue in men tends to be more fibrous in nature, meaning fat in this area is harder to remove.
How can it be treated?
At Cosmos Clinic, man boobs is treated as a day procedure using a combination of Liquid and Vaser Liposuction to efficiently remove the glandular and fat tissue. Patients are given a light sedation and local anaesthesia to numb the area around the chest via a tiny cannula. The ultrasound energy transmitted through the cannula then separates the fat cells from the fibrous tissue.
Traditional liposuction for this area was difficult and much like trying to break a “brick of fat” into small pieces. Vaser Liposuction has made this process more efficient as high energy from the ultrasound separates the fat cells from the fibrous tissue, converting it from a “brick” into a form like “melted butter” thus making it easy to remove. During the procedure, the gland is also surgically removed along with the excess fat.
The Difference Between Gynaecomastia And Man Boobs?
The two terms are actually interrelated and involve the accumulation of fat and tissue in the breast area. With true Gynaecomastia, where there is just tissue, you will be able to feel a hard lump.
An examination of your chest to determine the consistency of the chest tissue by your doctor or Plastic Surgeon will determine whether your problem is due to excess glandular tissue development or excess fat.
