We all know that beauty trends are in constant motion, and right now, big lips are in. However, we can’t all be blessed with the plump, luscious lips that are so popular today. If you have naturally thin lips or have perhaps begun to lose volume with age, lip fillers at Cosmos Clinic can completely transform your pout. We offer top-of-the-line dermal lip fillers to enhance the size and shape of your lips. With this simple, non-invasive cosmetic injectable treatment, you can add volume, define the lip border, improve lip symmetry, and reduce smoker’s lines.
Lip augmentation involves injecting the lips with dermal filler, a cosmetic injectable designed to fill fine lines and restore volume. Usually referred to as lip filler, this treatment is fast becoming one of the most popular cosmetic treatments. This procedure works by imitating a sugar molecule that occurs naturally within the body. This gel-like substance works to bind water, transport nutrients, and regulate the skin’s water balance. When strategically injected into the lips, this molecule adds volume to your lips in an instant.
Remember that dermal fillers aren’t just for the lips. Many patients opt for dermal fillers to enhance their overall facial contours by restoring volume to the cheeks, jawline, chin, temples, tear troughs and more.
Reasons to consider lip enhancement
Lip fillers do more than plump up your pout. Below are some of the other ways this highly versatile treatment can enhance your lips:
Add volume to naturally thin lips
Lift the upper lip to create a plumper pout
Add definition to the lip border
Adjust and enhance the shape of the lips
Minimise the appearance of a gummy smile
Reduce the appearance of lines on the lips and around the mouth
Why choose Cosmos Clinic Canberra for lip augmentation
Lip fillers are popular for a reason. For one, lip injections take as little as 15 to 30 minutes to administer. They can even be performed during your lunch breaks, making them the perfect treatment for busy patients. In just one quick visit, you can dramatically increase the volume of your lips and restore confidence in an instant.
However, with so many cosmetic clinics offering dermal lip fillers, it can be hard to determine where to go. At Cosmos Clinic Canberra, all of our cosmetic injectors are highly experienced medical professionals with particular training in lip injections. In fact, one of our injectors has been appointed as an Allergan National Trainer (a prestigious title held by less than 20 doctors nationwide).
When searching for a cosmetic injection, be sure to look out for:
A reputable clinic with a good track record of results
An injector with several years of experience
Numerous before and after photos of actual patients
What can I expect during my lip filler treatment
Keep in mind that dermal lip filler is a prescribed medication, which can only be administered by a qualified medical practitioner. Given this, all patients must visit us for a consultation before any cosmetic injectable treatment to ensure that you are a suitable candidate.
Before administering your injections, your lips will be numbed with cream and an ice pack in order to minimise discomfort. One of our experienced doctors or registered cosmetic nurses will then inject the product into the lips using either a needle or a cannula. The lip fillers used at our clinic do contain a local anaesthetic, although you may feel a stinging sensation as the product is injected. Once complete, your injector will apply pressure to the lips with gauze. You will see the results immediately after treatment.
What can I expect after my lip filler treatment
Lip filler is a rather simple treatment that can be performed during your lunch break, after work or at the start of your weekend. As a walk-in, walk-out procedure, patients are free to resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. However, remember that the lips are a sensitive area, and you will likely experience some mild swelling for one to two days following treatment. In some cases, swelling and bruising can persist for up to a week.
If tenderness and swelling are causing discomfort, we recommend applying ice or a cool compress to the lips for ten minutes every hour. However, do not apply this directly to the lips and wrap the ice or compress in a small towel instead. Avoiding any strenuous exercise or excessive heat for at least 24 hours can also help keep swelling and tenderness under control.
Be sure to also stay hydrated following a lip filler treatment and avoiding alcohol and smoking for 24 hours minimum. If you require any pain relief during your recovery, you should use paracetamol instead of aspirin or ibuprofen. However, your cosmetic injector will provide more thorough aftercare instructions during your treatment.

Am I a candidate for lip filler?
If you are unhappy with the appearance of your lips and wish to boost volume, define the lip border, enhance your lip shape, and minimise lip lines, you are likely an excellent candidate for lip fillers. Although both men and women can benefit from lip injections, keep in mind that you must be at least 18 years old to undergo this treatment.
What brands of lip filler do you use?
Australian advertising guidelines prohibit us from stating which dermal lip filler brands are used in our clinic. This is because cosmetic injectables are a prescription medicine and can only be prescribed by a doctor. Given this, you must have a consultation at our clinic to determine whether lip injections are suitable for you. At Cosmos Clinic Canberra, we use high-quality dermal lip fillers from a range of well-trusted brands. If you’d like to learn more, we can talk freely about your options during a consultation.
How do I prepare for lip augmentation?
There are numerous things we recommend doing to prepare for a lip filler treatment. The most important is to avoid any potential blood thinners for around a week beforehand. This includes alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, omega 3 and vitamin E. If you are prone to cold sores, we advise speaking with your doctor about potentially taking prophylactic medication. Furthermore, patients who have had a recent COVID-19 vaccination should wait at least two weeks before scheduling a lip injection appointment.
Can I combine lip enhancement with other treatments?
Many lip filler patients choose to treat other areas of their face with dermal filler as well, including the cheeks, jawline, and chin. You may also opt to have anti-wrinkle injections for total facial rejuvenation. As an anti-ageing strategy, lip and dermal fillers add volume and shape to the face, while anti-wrinkle injections minimise fine lines and wrinkles. You can discuss whether other cosmetic injectables may be suitable for you during your consultation.
Do lip injections hurt?
At Cosmos Clinic Canberra, we always numb the lips before administering lip injections, which makes the treatment relatively comfortable. While you may feel some slight pressure or a stinging sensation as the product is injected, whether you find this painful will depend on your individual pain tolerance.
How long do lip fillers last?
Lip augmentation results are not permanent, and the product will eventually be metabolised by the body. How quickly this happens will depend on factors such as the type of filler used and your skin type, lifestyle, and age. Typically, you can expect lip injections to last for around six months, although some patients find that their filler dissolves quicker or slower than this. At Cosmos Clinic, we typically recommend scheduling top-up treatments every six to 12 months.
What can I do if I don’t like my results?
Those who are unhappy with their results have a few options. If you desire more volume or need to even out asymmetry, your cosmetic injector can administer additional dermal lip filler. Alternatively, if you are completely dissatisfied with your results, we can inject an enzyme into the lips that completely dissolves the filler.
Where else can dermal filler be injected?
Besides the lips, we use dermal fillers to soften and plump various other areas of the face, such as the:
How much lip filler do I need?
Everyone is different and, as such, will require a different amount of dermal lip filler, depending on their natural lip shape and desired outcomes. If you are new to filler or are looking for a more natural enhancement, we typically advise starting with a single syringe or ml of filler. If you feel that this is not enough once the swelling has subsided, we encourage you to return to the clinic to determine whether an additional ml of filler can help you achieve your desired result. However, we will discuss how much dermal lip filler you may need during your initial consultation.
Do lip injections have any side effects?
Most people tolerate lip injections very well, even after years of repeated treatments. However, just like any other medical procedure, there are some temporary side effects to be aware of. These include swelling, redness, and bruising, which all usually resolve within a few hours or days.
Some patients may develop some rarer complications, such as lumps or infection. Luckily, if the product needs to be reversed to address these complications, lip injections can be dissolved instantly using a special enzyme.
In extremely rare cases, the product may be injected into a blood vessel rather than beneath the skin. This can block blood flow, leading to skin death and, in severe cases, blindness. For this reason, we strongly recommend seeing a highly experienced cosmetic injector who knows how to prevent this complication.
