THE RESULTS
Particularly in recent years, dermal fillers have become a highly popular treatment, probably because they produce noticeable aesthetic improvements that once could only be accomplished with surgery. This cosmetic injectable treatment works by imitating a sugar molecule that occurs naturally within the body. The role of this gel-like substance is to bind water, transport nutrients and regulate the skin’s water balance. When strategically injected under the skin, this molecule instantly restores facial volume, softens wrinkles, and enhances facial contours.
Dermal fillers have evolved considerably over the last decade. Today’s dermal filler injections are highly specialised and can be used to sculpt and contour the face in ways that weren’t possible before. Some are softer in texture and suitable for restoring volume under the eyes. Others are much denser and can lift the cheeks or give the chin and jawline structure and definition.
The biggest advantage of dermal fillers is their ability to rejuvenate the skin without surgery or downtime. In just one visit, patients can achieve profound facial lifting and contouring, helping to reverse the signs of aging and giving patients back their confidence.
Considering that there are so many cosmetic clinics offering dermal filler treatments, it can be hard to determine who to go to. At Cosmos Aesthetics Canberra, all of our cosmetic injectors are experienced medical professionals with specific training in performing dermal filler treatments. In fact, one of our injectors has been appointed as an Allergan National Trainer (a prestigious title held by less than 20 doctors nationwide)! We are a reputable clinic with years of experience and a good track record of results.
Here at Cosmos Aesthetics Canberra, we use dermal fillers to plump and soften various areas of the face, including the:
Remember that dermal filler is a prescribed medication, which means that only a qualified medical practitioner can administer your injections. As such, all patients must visit us for a consultation at Cosmos Aesthetics Canberra before any cosmetic injectable treatment to ensure that you are a suitable candidate.
Before injecting your dermal fillers, your cosmetic injector will thoroughly cleanse your face before applying ice to numb the treatment area. Dermal fillers can be injected with either a needle or cannula, depending on the treatment area. At Cosmos Aesthetics, we use dermal fillers that contain a local anaesthetic, which should minimise discomfort during the procedure. While you may feel a slight pinch as the product is injected, the procedure is relatively painless. Immediately following your injections, your cosmetic injector will apply pressure to the treatment area with gauze. Overall, dermal fillers are a quick outpatient procedure that can be performed in less than an hour.
One great benefit of dermal fillers is that the treatment is relatively simple and can be performed during your lunch break, after work or at the start of your weekend. As a walk-in, walk-out procedure, patients are free to resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Although you may experience some slight swelling, bruising and tenderness in the treated areas, these side effects are usually mild and should resolve within a few days.
If swelling or tenderness is causing discomfort, we recommend applying a cool compress for ten minutes every hour. However, try to avoid applying the ice or cool compress directly onto the skin and wrap it in a small towel instead. We also suggest avoiding any strenuous exercise or excessive heat for at least 24 hours, which can also help keep tenderness and swelling under control.
It is also important to stay hydrated after a dermal filler treatment and avoid alcohol or smoking for a minimum of 24 hours. If, for whatever reason, you require pain relief after a dermal filler treatment, we suggest using paracetamol instead of aspirin or ibuprofen. However, your cosmetic injector will provide you with more thorough aftercare instructions during your treatment.
How much your dermal filler treatment will cost is dependent on numerous factors, such as the specific treatment area, the amount of filler required, and the type of filler uses. At Cosmos Aesthetics, we understand that every patient is different and requires a customised treatment plan to address their cosmetic concerns and goals. Ultimately, the best way to determine the cost of your dermal filler treatment is to book a consultation with one of our experienced cosmetic injectors. If you’re starting to notice mild to moderate volume loss and skin sagging, you may be a good candidate for dermal fillers. Also, if you’d like to improve the shape of your nose or achieve a more chiselled jawline, fillers can be a great non-surgical option. Women and men alike can benefit from dermal fillers. However, keep in mind that patients with considerable skin sagging and aging may require surgery to produce more dramatic and satisfactory results.
Before a dermal filler treatment, there are a number of things that you should do to prepare. The most important thing is to avoid any potential blood thinners for around a week before treatment. This includes alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, omega-3 supplements and vitamin E. If you are prone to cold sores, you may need to speak to your doctor about taking prophylactic medication prior to treatment. Additionally, if you have had a recent COVID-19 vaccination, you should wait at least two weeks before scheduling a dermal filler treatment.
Here in Australia, we are legally unable to state which dermal filler brands we use. As dermal fillers are classified as prescription medicine, only doctors can prescribe dermal fillers. Given this, you must have a consultation with us prior to treatment to ensure that dermal fillers are an appropriate treatment for you.
At Cosmos Aesthetics Canberra, we use high-quality dermal fillers from a range of well-trusted brands. If you’d like to learn more, our cosmetic injectors can talk freely about your options during a consultation.
As dermal filler techniques are increasingly becoming more sophisticated, patients now have access to highly effective non-surgical facial rejuvenation options. However, cosmetic injectables are not a suitable option for everyone. Patients with excess skin or severe sun damage may require alternative options, such as surgery or laser resurfacing, to achieve their desired results.
While dermal fillers cannot completely halt the ageing process, they can prevent lines and volume loss from worsening. In fact, dermal fillers can stimulate the production of collagen, which keeps our skin looking fresh, plump, and youthful.
At Cosmos Aesthetics, we are seeing an increasing number of patients opt for dermal fillers as a preventative anti-ageing treatment. Although anyone over 18 years old can undergo a dermal filler treatment, the best time to begin treatment will differ for everyone. Ultimately, dermal fillers are an effective way to reduce the visible signs of ageing without the need for surgery.
Most patients tolerate dermal filler injections exceptionally well, even following many years of use. However, as with any other medical procedure, you can expect some temporary side effects, such as swelling, redness and bruising. These normally resolve after several hours or within a few days.
It is possible to experience some rarer complications, such as infection or lumps (also known as granulomas). The good news is dermal filler can be instantly dissolved with a special enzyme in the event that the filler needs to be reversed.
In some extremely rare cases, dermal filler can be accidentally injected into the blood vessels rather than beneath the skin. This can block blood supply and lead to skin death and, in severe cases, blindness. This is why we always stress seeing a highly experienced cosmetic injector who has the training to avoid these complications.
Many patients opt to combine their dermal fillers with additional non-surgical facial treatments, in particular anti-wrinkle injections. As an anti-ageing strategy, dermal fillers can restore volume and shape to the face, while anti-wrinkle injections minimise the appearance of fine lines and deep wrinkles. You can learn more about whether this option is suitable for you during your consultation.
Please note that dermal fillers are not permanent and will eventually be absorbed by the body. The rate at which this happens will depend on factors such as the treatment area, the type of filler used and your skin type, age, and lifestyle.
Typically, you can expect dermal fillers to last between nine months and two years; however, dermal lip fillers may only last for around six months. If you have never had dermal fillers before, keep in mind that you may require regular treatments every few months before you reach your cosmetic goals. After this, we suggest scheduling top-up treatments every six to 12 months.
During a dermal filler treatment at Cosmos Aesthetics, we will always begin by numbing the treatment area, which minimises the amount of pain felt during the procedure. While you may feel some slight pressure or a stinging sensation as the product is injected, whether or not you find the process painful will depend on the area treated and your individual pain tolerance.
There are a few options available to patients who are unhappy with their dermal filler results. If you need to balance asymmetrical results or simply wish for a more enhanced look, your cosmetic injector can administer additional dermal filler. Alternatively, if you are completely unhappy with how your filler looks, we can inject an enzyme into the treatment area that dissolves the dermal filler completely.
Every patient desires a different cosmetic outcome, which means that every patient will require a different amount of dermal filler. If you are looking for a natural enhancement or are new to dermal filler, we usually suggest beginning with a single syringe in the lips or in each cheek. However, if you feel that this is not enough once the swelling has subsided, you are welcome to return to Cosmos Aesthetics Canberra to determine whether an extra ml of filler can help you achieve your desired results. Your cosmetic injector will discuss how much dermal filler will best help you reach your aesthetic goals during your consultation.
