At Cosmos Clinic Melbourne, our liposuction and liposculpture treatments are designed to help both men and women remove unwanted pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise efforts. Vaser Liposuction is an advanced cosmetic procedure for sculpting all areas of the body. It can reduce inches around the tummy, love handles, arms, legs (inner thighs) and neck. It can also be used for man boobs (gynecomastia), breast reduction and chubby cheeks.
Patients can see a permanent improvement in body shape after Vaser Liposuction – fat is distributed more evenly as excess fat cells have been removed.
After Vaser Liposuction, skin tightening is also possible thanks to the Vaser ultrasound technology. Those who require a greater degree of skin tightening and retraction can combine Vaser Liposuction with our Renuvion Skin Tightening treatments.
Subtle results may be achieved with non-surgical liposuction called CoolSculpting.
More Gentle than Traditional Liposuction for Melting Fat and Tightening Skin
During the Vaser Liposuction procedure, patients are placed under twilight sedation. This eliminates the need for general anaesthesia and reduces the complications that are normally associated with cosmetic surgery. A general anaesthetic is available upon request.
Vaser liposuction involves making small incisions through which numbing solution is administered under the skin. The solution also acts as a medium for high-energy ultrasound to break down fatty tissue.
To disguise any scarring from this surgical procedure, incisions are placed in discreet areas such as in the belly button or near the bikini line in the case of tummy liposuction.
Next, a small ultrasound probe or cannula is inserted under the skin to dissolve the fat cells and make the suction process easier. Vaser Liposuction transforms the “brick” of fat into a soft material (much like melting a slab of butter) to facilitate the removal of fat.
The main benefit of Vaser Liposuction is it allows for more even removal of fat than traditional liposuction. The numbing solution makes the fat under the skin more homogeneous and less clumpy. The ultrasound-assisted energy also stimulates collagen production, promoting skin tightening in the treatment area. This results in smoother contours and prevents skin dimpling and sagging.
To achieve the smoothest results possible, patients may be re-positioned or asked to stand up during the procedure. This allows the doctor to assess and remove fat from different angles.
Patients will be thoroughly assessed and fitted with a compression garment before being discharged. To promote a speedy recovery and prevent complications, patients will be monitored with regular follow-up appointments, including complimentary lymphatic drainage massage to reduce side effects such as swelling.

Vaser Body Contouring Recovery and What to Expect
There is no overnight stay required with Vaser Liposuction Melbourne. Since it’s performed under twilight sedation, all patients can return home the same day. Patients will leave the clinic wearing a compression garment to help with the healing process, skin retraction, and minimise swelling. There may be fluid seepage for 3-5 days following the procedure. The compression garments are worn for three weeks full-time and then three weeks part-time. In most cases, the recovery from Vaser Liposuction has minimal discomfort, although some bruising may occur.
Most patients are cleared to return to work one week after treatment. Regular follow-up and lymphatic drainage massage are done twice a week for two weeks to help in the recovery process. To optimise your recovery, we ask that you become familiar with the following do’s of Liposuction recovery:
Do wear your liposuction compression garments
Do maintain a healthy diet
Do listen to your body
Do take care of your surgical sites
Do attend post surgical check ups
Most of the results become noticeable six weeks after your Vaser liposuction procedure. At this point, photos are taken to assess your progress. The final results may not be apparent for three to six months post-procedure. Strict adherence to the preoperative and postoperative instructions is necessary in order to achieve the best possible results.
*Results may vary from patient to patient. **All photos are of patients from Cosmos Clinic, and all ‘after’ images are taken six weeks post operation.

Why Vaser Liposuction is The Superior Liposuction Technique
At Cosmos Clinic Melbourne, we specialise in the Vaser Liposuction method, to maximise results and minimise discomfort. Let’s take a look at how Vaser Liposuction compares to other common liposuction techniques.
Unlike traditional liposuction techniques, Vaser is performed in three main stages. First, your doctor will inject a tumescent solution into the treated areas, which works to numb those areas and prepare the body for stage two. During the second stage, your doctor will use the Vaser probe to melt the fat underneath the skin, which also heats the skin to promote skin tightening. The third and final stage involves suctioning out the fat out of the body in a liquid-like consistency.
This second stage is skipped with traditional liposuction, which means that the fat melting stage in liposuction. To put it in simple terms, traditional liposuction can be described as sucking out a brick of fat through a straw. In contrast, Vaser liposuction melts the fat beforehand, making it similar to sucking butter out through a straw. Thanks to this extra separation stage, there is less trauma to the body during a Vaser liposuction procedure. This means a gentler healing process and overall better results as more fat cells are removed.
Where Vaser liposuction using ultrasound energy to separate fat cells, Liposoft uses water. As a result, no heat is given off during a Liposoft procedure, meaning that you will not benefit from the skin tightening effects that the Vaser probe offers.
As the name suggests, Laser Liposuction uses light to melt fat cells. During the procedure, laser energy is delivered through the tip of the probe, whereas during a Vaser liposuction procedure, energy is delivered from both the tip and the sides of the probe. As a result, Vaser liposuction gives out more energy in a more uniform pattern, thus producing better results. Laser liposuction is limited in that it can only be used for small areas, such as the neck. This is because the laser technique is unable to melt large volumes of fat, meaning that it cannot effectively treat areas like the abdomen and flanks.
Bodytite works in a similar way to Vaser liposuction, however, it uses radiofrequency instead of ultrasound waves. However, Vaser does provide a number of benefits over Bodytite in that it causes less trauma to the tissues, which minimises risks and recovery times. The heat produced during Vaser liposuction is also gentler and more uniform, which minimises pain during the procedure.
What Areas Can Vaser Liposuction Treat
The abdomen can be divided into two areas: the upper tummy (the area between the ribs and belly button) and the lower tummy (the area between the belly button and bikini line). At Cosmos Clinic Melbourne, we can use Vaser liposuction to treat one or both of these areas simultaneously. For liposuction on the abdomen, incisions are placed discreetly in the belly button and near the bikini line. While Vaser liposuction typically promotes good skin retraction, some patients may be more suitable for a tummy tuck if they have significant skin sagging. Our liposuction doctors in Melbourne will advise you on which treatment option best suits you during a consultation.
Inner & Outer Thighs and Knees
Many of us desire more attractive legs, despite not being genetically blessed with proportionate thighs. Fat is often unevenly distributed throughout the inner and outer thighs, leading to discomfort. As an example, the constant friction of the inner thighs rubbing together can lead to chafing of the skin and even develop into sores and infection.
Front of Thighs
The front of the thighs can be a difficult area to treat and is best suited to patients with toned skin and mostly fat in the area. However, people often confuse bulky muscle in this area for fat, so a consultation is the best way to determine whether liposuction can resolve your concerns.
Flanks (Love Handles)
Commonly referred to as love handles, the flanks sit above the hip bones and are a common concern amongst patients. Love handles can hang over your jeans and add width to your waistline. For liposuction on the flanks, incisions are hidden within the underwear line.
Buttocks & Banana Roll
The dream of a well-proportioned behind is often left unrealised when the position of fat causes a drooping buttock or “banana roll”. This appears in the area between the curve of the buttock and the start of the thighs. Achieving a smaller bottom is very possible with liposuction, however, it does require skill and artistic flair on the doctor’s behalf. Vaser Liposuction, when in our experienced doctor’s hands, can provide smooth and symmetric results.
Fat distribution on the back can be broken down into two main areas: the upper back (above the bra line) and the lower back (below the bra line). These areas are difficult to shift as they are resistant to exercise and can be challenging for liposuction doctors to treat due to the fibrous nature of the fat. However, with our Vaser technique, we can turn back fat to a more buttery consistency, allowing for easier suction to create a more desirable, ‘V’ shaped back.
Fat in the arm tends to build around the triceps (backs of the arms) and laterals (sides of the arms). Removing stubborn fat from these areas with liposuction can create a slimmer, more proportionate appearance to the body, particularly in women.
Women with overly large breasts often experience discomfort, backaches, exercise difficulties and self-esteem issues. A breast reduction using liposuction techniques can both remove excess fat from this area and create a lift for a more proportionate, youthful appearance. While this minimally invasive procedure is a great option for many women, a consultation with our Melbourne liposuction doctors is the best way to determine whether this or a traditional breast reduction is more suitable for you.
Male Breasts (aka Man Boobs)
Excessive development of breast tissue in men, commonly known as man boobs, is a common cause of anxiety. As this is usually genetically predetermined, you, unfortunately, cannot treat man boobs with exercise. Vaser liposuction works to remove fat and glands from this area gently. To create a more athletic chest, further sculpting can also be done.
Jaw & Neck Line
With age, fat deposits often develop in the jawline, jowls and neck area. When coupled with sagging and wrinkled skin, this can lead to what is known as a “wattle neck”. Vaser liposuction is one of the safest and most effective methods of removing fat from this area.
Face & Cheeks
Many people, particularly those of Asian descent, are genetically predisposed to facial fat. To achieve a more youthful, toned experience, Vaser liposuction can sculpt the face and reduce what is known as a “chipmunk” appearance.
We understand that cost plays a huge factor in your decision to undergo cosmetic surgery. However, liposuction does not fit into a one price fits all strategy. The cost of your liposuction procedure will vary from patient to patient, depending on several factors, including:
The areas of the body treated
The method of liposuction used
The patient’s body type
The type of anaesthetic used
The amount of time spent in surgery
At Cosmos Clinic Melbourne, our Vaser liposuction procedures start at $4,400 for one area. However, if you are interested in treating multiple areas at once, you can expect quicker recovery times AND reduced overall costs. Each additional area treated at Cosmos Clinic will cost approximately $1,750 on top of the base price. However, to receive the most accurate price, please organise a consultation with one of our liposuction doctors.
Am I a candidate for liposuction?
If you fit the following criteria, you may be a candidate for our liposuction or liposculpture procedures:
You are in good physical and mental health
You have realistic expectations regarding what liposuction surgery can achieve
You are unhappy with the appearance of stubborn pockets of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise
You have good skin elasticity
You are at a stable, healthy weight
You are a non-smoker or are prepared to quit smoking before and after surgery
Remember that liposuction is not designed to treat obesity and should never be considered an alternative to exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Ideal liposuction patients are committed to following healthy habits after surgery to maintain their results in the long term.
Liposuction surgery usually produces the best results in patients between 20 and 30 years old, who live a healthy lifestyle and are close to their ideal weight, although they struggle with moderate pockets of fat. This is because their skin is more likely to retract after surgery, minimising the chances of loose, excess skin. Older patients typically have less skin elasticity and may not achieve the results of a younger patient with firm skin.
Of course, the best way to determine whether you are a candidate is to meet with our Melbourne liposuction doctors at Cosmos Clinic.
What are the things to consider before undergoing liposuction?
Choosing to undergo cosmetic surgery is a significant decision, and we suggest all patients take the time to carefully consider their cosmetic goals and think about whether liposuction is the right choice. Take a look at your health habits: are you prepared to change your exercise and diet habits to maintain your results after surgery? Other questions to ask yourself include: are you prepared to wait months for your surgical results to appear? Are you committed to quitting smoking in the weeks before and after surgery? Before proceeding with surgery, you should talk with one of our liposuction doctors, who can give an honest opinion about whether liposuction is right for you.
How do I prepare for my liposuction procedure?
Your liposuction doctor will provide you with specific pre-operative instructions during your consultation at Cosmos Clinic Melbourne. For smokers, you must stop at least two weeks beforehand, as smoking can increase surgical complications and slow healing times. In addition, you may need to avoid certain medications and supplements to prevent excessive bleeding and bruising during your liposuction recovery. We highly recommend taking steps beforehand to prepare for recovery: purchase some comfortable clothing, fill needed prescriptions, cook healthy meals and arrange for someone to pick you up from the hospital and assist you for the first few days at home.
How long does the procedure take?
Depending on the treated area and the amount of fat removed, liposuction can take anywhere from one to four hours to complete.
How long does it take to see results?
While you may see some subtle improvements immediately after your liposuction procedure, it will take a bit of time for your final results to appear. Before seeing your full results, you will need to wait for post-operative swelling to subside and give the skin time to retract and tighten in the treated area. Some liposuction patients notice their full results within three to six months after surgery, while others find that their results continue to improve for up to a year. To speed recovery and see results sooner, be sure to follow all of your doctor’s post-operative instructions.
Can I treat multiple areas in one procedure?
Yes, many patients choose to treat multiple areas of concern in one liposuction procedure. For example, you may choose to treat the arms and back, or the abdomen and love handles simultaneously. Although there is no limit to how many areas we can treat at once, we typically suggest a maximum of three or four areas. Also, keep in mind that treating multiple places at once will increase surgery times, recovery times and cost.
How much fat can be removed during a liposuction procedure?
There is a limit to how much fat can be safely removed during a liposuction procedure. At Cosmos Clinic Melbourne, we only ever remove three to five litres of fat during a single procedure, depending on your aesthetic goals and overall body weight.
For patient safety, the maximum amount of fat that we can remove during a liposuction procedure is five litres. This limit applies regardless of weight, percentage of body fat and desired results. In fact, one study found that removing more than five litres increased complication rates by 3.7 percent. If you need more fat removed, you will need to undergo multiple liposuction sessions.
Will my result be permanent?
Your liposuction results will be permanent in the sense that the removed fat cells can never return. However, your remaining fat cells can still grow in size, meaning that it is possible to gain weight again in the future, although this may be in different areas of the body.
Also keep in mind that a number of external factors can impact your results. For example, liposuction does not pause the ageing process and things like inflammation, weight fluctuations and gravity can all impact the way your results look over time.
Will I feel pain during my liposuction procedure?
Many of our patients are pleasantly surprised by how little pain they experience during and after their liposuction procedure. Regardless, any pain and discomfort can be relieved with medications prescribed following the procedure.
Will I need more than one liposuction session?
Whether you need more than one liposuction session depends on various factors, such as your desired outcome and expectations, and how much fat needs to be removed to achieve that. While our experienced liposuction doctors always strive to achieve the best possible fat reduction during your initial procedure, in some cases, additional sessions may be required.
Can liposuction help patients who are obese?
No, liposuction is not designed to treat obesity. However, our Mega Liposuction technique can help overweight patients lose considerable amounts of fat.
Do I need to reach a certain weight to undergo liposuction?
Although there aren’t any specific weight restrictions to have liposuction or liposculpture, you should endeavour to reach a healthy, stable weight before considering surgery. After all, any major weight fluctuations after your procedure can stretch the skin and affect your liposuction results.
Remember that liposuction is not a weight-loss solution and should only be used to address stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. As such, if you are within the overweight or obese weight range, we suggest losing as much weight as possible before considering surgery.
What can I do to maintain my liposuction results?
Keep in mind that while liposuction can dramatically improve your body’s proportions and contours, you will need to put in some work to maintain this. Considering that liposuction is an invasive procedure that costs both time and money, we’re sure you’ll want to do as much as possible to protect that investment. By choosing a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and a nutrient-rich diet, you can expect to enjoy your liposuction results for a long time.
How bad is scarring after a liposuction procedure?
While scarring is an inevitable part of any surgical procedure, significant scarring is uncommon following liposuction. This is because the incisions required to insert the cannulas under the skin are only small. Plus, our liposuction doctors at Cosmos Clinic always aim to make the smallest incisions possible in places that you can hide easily.
Regardless, any noticeable scarring will fade in time, especially if you follow the scar management instructions given by your doctor.
Will liposuction give me loose skin?
After a liposuction procedure, you should find that your skin naturally contracts to some degree due to the skin’s natural healing process. However, how well the skin contracts can vary from person to person, depending on the elasticity of the skin. Patients with good skin elasticity typically find themselves with firm, smooth skin following the procedure, while patients with poor skin elasticity may experience looseness or wrinkling of the skin. Despite that, if you are left with loose skin after your liposuction procedure, Cosmos Clinic Melbourne offers various non-surgical treatments that can help restore a tighter, firmer appearance.
Are there any non-surgical alternatives to liposuction?
There are a rising number of non-surgical fat removal treatments that provide an alternative to liposuction, perfect for patients who aren’t yet ready to commit to surgery. These treatments typically use some energy, whether that be sound waves, light waves, radio waves or exposure to cold, to damage and shrink fat cells. However, while these techniques are more affordable and less invasive than liposuction surgery, results will be far more subtle.
At Cosmos Clinic Melbourne, we offer CoolSculpting treatments to permanently reduce fat cells without the need for surgery.
What are the risks and side effects associated with liposuction?
While Vaser liposuction is considered a lower risk procedure than traditional liposuction, every procedure has its risks. However, keep in mind that complications are extremely unlikely, and we’ve performed thousands of liposuction procedures in Melbourne without incident. Some of the side effects you may experience after liposuction include:
Pain and aching
Bruising and bleeding
Asymmetry or skin irregularities
Changes in skin sensation
Loose skin that doesn’t adjust to your new body contour
