Microdermabrasion: The basics

Microdermabrasion is a very simple, easy, and cost effective treatment to help polish skin, making it look refreshed and revitalised. Microdermabrasion can help to combat ageing signs and helps to reduce pigmentation. It is non-surgical, requires no needles and barely (if any down-time). Whats more is that it is cost effective too!

Explaining the skin

The skins main role is to act as a two-way barrier. The outermost layer of the skin, known as the epidermis, continually produce new skin cells which shed over time. The non-living outer layer is the skins first line of defence, and due to a multitude of factors, this layer can become thick. Factors include; Ageing, disease and sunlight exposure. This result thick, dull, leathery skin.

Many are familiar with the term exfoliation. It is a loosely used term that skin care brands utilise, however it is a very important part in keeping your skin looking fresh. Exfoliation is the process of reducing the excess of non-living skin cells from the surface of the skin. It allows the natural beauty of the skin to shine through, helps to unblock pores, and slightly reduces the barrier protection of the skin so as to allow for better penetration of topical creams and gels, such as moisturises and antioxidants. The increased skin cell turnover rate further helps to stimulate collagen production and helps to even out skin tone.

What is Microdermabrasion

There are 3 ways in which you can exfoliate your skin, either Chemical, Mechanical or a combination of both. Microdermabrasion is a type of Mechanical exfoliation. It involves a vacuum tip drawing very fine crystals over the surface of the skin. The vacuum helps to move the crystals, stimulate the blood flow, and increase the thickness of the fine collagen fibres in the skin.

The procedure is taken extermely well by most people which adds to its popularity. It is a good way in which to “kick-start” a good skin care regime for sufferers of clogged pores, sundamaged and weathered skin. After your first treatment you will already see a glow to your skin and with regular treatment, Microdermabrasion will result in more translucent and healthier looking skin.
