Cosmetic Surgery: Does It Make You Look ‘Plastic’?

October 4, 2011

When it comes to plastic surgery, many of us have been led to believe that it is dangerous, makes you look like a different person, and will eventually ruin your looks. This is largely perpetuated by magazines which publish hugely successful ‘Plastic Surgery Disasters’ issues, which carry speculative articles about current movie and music stars, along with hugely unflattering close-up photos of their botched nose/boob/etc job. But as anyone in the industry will tell you, these few unfortunate celebrities are the exception to the rule. And, in fact, the best plastic surgery cases, are not even known for what they’ve had done, because it is so subtle and hard to place.

How to avoid becoming a ‘Plastic Surgery Don’t’

There are many differences between people who become a plastic surgery ‘do’ and those who become a plastic surgery ‘don’t’, the first being that those who overdo plastic surgery usually try to make changes that are too dramatic.

Realistic Expectations

While there are some beautiful people who have had plastic surgery to improve or enhance their looks, the fact is that they were almost always beautiful to start out with. It is true that subtle changes to different areas of the body can have a dramatic effect, for example a slight change to the angle of the nose, or a slight chin enlargement, this is the only way to achieve great beauty.

Wanting to look like someone else

As soon as a patient starts asking to ‘look like’ someone else, or to have ‘X Celebrity’s nose’, alarm bells should start to go off.

Too much Surgery

When it comes to cosmetic enhancements, less is definitely more. While it is possible alter a couple of parts of the body without being noticed, as soon as you start to alter ever part of a person’s facial features, it can be difficult to maintain a sense of realism and natural proportion. After all, no one is flawless.

The Right Surgeon

Finally, the best way to achieve the best possible results is to choose a cosmetic practitioner or surgeon who is qualified, experienced, and can advise you in an impartial way, while managing your expectations. After all, if all you need is a few subtle Anti Wrinkle injections, you want a surgeon who will recommend this, instead of trying to sell you on a highly invasive face lift or body lift.
