Epidermal Creases & Dermal Folds Treatment

Wrinkle reduction treatments are used to address facial lines, including nasolabial folds, glabellar lines, and horizontal forehead rhytides. These treatments work by relaxing the facial muscles responsible for the development of fine lines and wrinkles.

    THE PROCEDURE

Epidermal Creases & Dermal Folds Treatment

Wrinkle reduction treatments work by blocking nerve impulses that control muscle movement. When injected into muscle tissue, the treatment relaxes the targeted muscles, typically within three days, reducing their ability to contract and form visible lines on the skin. The effects generally last between three to eight months, depending on the individual and the treatment area.

    Procedure Details:

    • The treatment involves 5–10 small injections per area.
    • For dynamic facial lines, the results usually last around three months.
    • Treated areas can include:
      • Lines between the eyebrows
      • Forehead expression line
      • Lines along the sides of the nose
      • Lines around the eyes
      • Eyebrow lift

Note: Wrinkle reduction is less effective for creases that remain visible when the skin is stretched.

Additional Applications of Wrinkle Reduction Treatments

In addition to reducing facial lines, wrinkle reduction treatments can be used for:

    • Excessive sweating
    • Lines around the mouth
    • Reducing neck muscle size
    • Reducing tension in the jaw
    • Relaxing and reducing the size of calf muscles
    • Relaxing muscles to reduce pain from tension headaches or migraines.
    • Alleviating spasms by blocking nerve impulses to overactive muscles.

    Pricing for Wrinkle Reduction Treatments

Costs vary based on the treatment area, product quantity, and treatment time. The amount used is measured in units, with typical treatments requiring 10–20 units per area. Pricing is determined by the number of units used and the activity level of the patient’s muscles. Typically prices start from $165 for the first treatment area.

    Aftercare Instructions

    • Avoid vigorous rubbing of the treated areas for at least 8 hours.
    • Refrain from extreme heat exposure (e.g., saunas) for the first few days.
    • Keep the treatment area clean.
    • Lightly move the treated muscles in the first few hours to promote activation.

Minor redness or small bumps at the injection site are common and typically subside within 15–30 minutes. Bruising, if present, generally fades within a few days to a week. Some patients may experience mild, short-term headaches, which often improve as the treatment’s muscle-relaxing effects take hold.

Wrinkle reduction results can last 3–8 months. For most patients, maintenance treatments are required 2–3 times a year to sustain results.

    Who is a Suitable Candidate?

Suitable candidates for wrinkle reduction treatments include those seeking to reduce epidermal creases & dermal folds caused by muscle activity beneath the skin. Patients should be in good overall health, with realistic expectations for the results.

    Who May Not Be Suitable:

    • Those with active skin infections or known allergies to the treatment product.
    • Patients with neuromuscular disorders (e.g., myasthenia gravis) or nerve conditions (e.g., ALS).
    • Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, as safety during these periods is not firmly established.

A consultation at Cosmos Clinic in Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, Melbourne or the Gold Coast will determine your suitability and address any concerns.

    Possible Side Effects and Complications

Wrinkle reduction treatments are generally safe and well-tolerated, with most patients experiencing no complications. However, mild and temporary side effects may occur, including:

    • Swelling or Redness: Common at the injection site but usually resolves within a few hours.
    • Bruising: Rare but possible, particularly in areas with prominent blood vessels. This fades within 2–7 days and can be minimised with ice packs before treatment.
    • Inadequate Muscle Relaxation: May require further injections after two weeks.
    • Drooping Eyelid or Forehead: Rare and usually temporary, lasting up to three weeks. Eye drops can help manage eyelid drooping.

Wrinkle relaxers only affect the treated muscles and are processed by the body within days. While effects on nerve impulses last 3–4 months, no long-term health hazards have been associated with their use.

For the best results and to minimise risks, ensure that treatments are administered by experienced professionals in a reputable clinic. If you have concerns or wish to learn more, consult your doctor or specialist.

    What are wrinkle relaxers?

Wrinkle relaxers are a purified protein derived from a bacterium, used to relax muscles responsible for the appearance of facial lines. Originally developed in 1978 to treat strabismus (crossed eyes), they have since been applied to a range of medical conditions, including:

    • Cerebral palsy
    • Migraines
    • Excessive sweating
    • Wry neck
    • Back and facial muscle spasms
    • Treatment of facial lines

Why do wrinkles and lines appear?

Lines between the eyebrows, around the eyes, and on the forehead commonly develop due to repetitive muscle contractions over time.

As part of the natural ageing process, collagen and elastin production in the skin gradually decreases. This reduction leads to less firmness and elasticity, making these lines more noticeable.

Wrinkle reduction treatments promote collagen remodelling beneath the skin, aiding in the repair of damaged collagen in areas where lines have formed.

    Do wrinkle relaxers hurt?

The injections required for wrinkle treatment are very small and should not cause any pain. Some patients can feel a small pinching or pricking sensation, but this should be very mild and tolerable. Since wrinkle reduction treatments work by relaxing the muscles, treatment can actually help with pain, as opposed to cause it.

How long does wrinkle reduction last?

Wrinkle reduction treatments causes muscle relaxation of the injected muscles, which can last from three to eight months. Experience with thousands of patients has shown that the vast majority using wrinkle relaxers on a regular basis will need treatments two or three times a year to maintain the improvement, or additional treatments about 12 to 16 weeks apart, depending on how quickly the results begin to subside per individual patient.
