Skin Needling helps stimulate Collagen production
Medical skin needling using Dermapen is a great way to induce collagen. Stimulating collagen helps improve skin texture and scarring, promoting fresh, youthful looking skin.
Quick Facts about Skin Needling
- Skin needling is combined with platelet rich plasma to help induce new collagen to improve skin texture (including acne scarring).
- A fine needle is placed over your skin mild discomfort is experienced with the application of local anaesthetic. PRP is applied over and under the skin to amplify the results.
- You will have some track marks and dry skin for 1-2 days after the treatment.
- You may require up to 3 treatments at 4-6 week intervals.
What is Skin Needling or Dermapen?
It involves passing a needle-rolling hand piece over the skin. The needles penetrate into the second layer of the skin, where it damages the old collagen and triggers the production of new collagen.
The mechanical damage triggered by the needling creates thousands of miniature skin wounds through which vitamin A and C oils can pass and further assist the collagen induction created by the inflammatory process. The new collagen is formed over 90 days and the results then continue to improve over the next year.
When is skin needling used?
Medical needling is used for facial rejuvenation to improve the texture, tone/tightness and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and scars. It is particularly useful for acne scarring and sun damaged skin. It may also help reduce pore size.
Skin Needling Procedure
A local anaesthetic cream is applied to your face for 15 – 20 minutes so that only a mild discomfort is felt during the treatment.
Medical needling is a safe method of collagen induction and the downtime can vary from 1-3 days.
Very fine needles on a rolling wheel are applied to your skin to induce the formation of new collagen which continues to improve for 3-6 months to achieve tighter, smoother skin.
The dermapen is used with platelet rich plasma to further improve the results. Blood is taken to prepare the PRP.
The procedure usually takes about an hour.
Skin Needling or Dermaroller can be used over any part of the body except for under the eyes.
What can I expect after a Dermapen treatment?
You will look flushed and pink after the procedure (similar to mild sunburn). Light scabs may form the next day which may take up to 2 weeks to fall off. You must not pick at these scabs. You must avoid any stimulating products suchs as AHAs, retinol (vitamin A) or any acidic or “active products” for a minimum of 2 days after the treatment.
Will I see the results immediately?
You will see an improvement in your skin after the first week or so. However, the new collagen is formed over 90 days and the results will continue to improve over the next 6-12 months.
How many treatments do I need?
Generally three treatments are needed, up to 6 treatments may be required at 4-6 weekly intervals.
Skin Needling versus Fractional Lasers
For a rapid improvement in skin texture, we recommend fractional laser treatment. Skin Needling is for people who want less downtime and less risk of complications, particularly for Asian or dark-skinned people. In general, two Dermapen treatments are equivalent to one fractional laser treatment. The Dermapen does not use heat energy like lasers so their is no risk of hyperpigmentation of the skin in dark or Asian patients.
Are there any side effects?
The inflammatory response of your skin is short and the red flushing will fade within hours after the treatment. A pinkish flush may last for 12 to 24 hours post treatment. Skin may appear dull and flakey for up to a week post treatment. It is advised that you avoiding active products for 48 hours and sun protection is a must.
What can I expect after the treatment?
Your skin will be red with some track marks for 24 to 48 hours after the treatment. Your skin may appear dry for a week and some clients experience a break out of acne around the mouth and chin.
How much does it cost?
The Dermaroller treatment will cost between $400 to $600. For an additional $200 you can request Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment to further improve the results.
