THE RESULTS
A common condition, gynecomastia is a hormone imbalance that causes enlarged breast tissue in boys, men and even newborn babies. Although breasts don’t typically develop in men the same way as in women, all males are born with a small amount of breast tissue. Sometimes, when a man’s body makes less testosterone than estrogen, the body can develop an excessive amount of breast gland tissue.
In most cases, gynecomastia isn’t harmful to your health and can clear up on its own. However, medical treatment may be necessary, if the gynecomastia persists longer than one year, or if there is swelling, discharge, pain or tenderness in the breast area.
Gynecomastia can be caused by natural changes in your hormones, weight gain, health conditions such as hyperthyroidism, certain medications, and alcohol and drug use. To find the cause of your condition, you can undergo some tests, such as hormone level tests, an ultrasound, liver function and kidney function tests, or a mammogram. Finding the cause of your condition can enable you to treat any health issues that are causing the condition, helping you to manage your health in the long term.

At Cosmos Clinic Sydney, we use Vaser liposuction to treat gynecomastia. Vaser liposuction is considered the gold standard treatment for gynecomastia. That’s because it is technologically advanced, minimally invasive and demands minimal downtime. Vaser is performed under light sedation and patients can usually go home the same day. There’s also less downtime, bruising and swelling. That’s because Vaser has shown to disrupt less of the connective and surrounding tissue than traditional liposuction methods.
Suitable candidates for man boobs surgery typically include:
Ultimately, the best way to determine your suitability for gynecomastia surgery is to have a consultation at Cosmos Clinic Sydney. Every patient is different and will have different personal factors and characteristics that will need to be considered before deciding that surgery with Vaser liposuction is a suitable option.

Locations available
To perform the male breast reduction procedure using Vaser liposuction, tiny incisions will be made, usually in a location that is not highly visible, such as under an arm. A tumescent solution will then be injected, which helps to break down the unwanted fat cells, and contains a local anaesthetic to help numb the area. This is followed by inserting a thin ultrasound-emitting probe that breaks down the fat cells in the chest area, allowing for a gentler and easier removal with liposuction. Ultrasound energy has an added benefit of stimulating the contraction of collagen fibres, which contributes to firmer, healthier skin.
The treatment can take about two hours to perform, however, total time spent in surgery will depend on multiple factors that will vary from patient to patient.
It’s normal to experience some swelling, bruising and soreness after your gynecomastia surgery. To navigate your recovery, you will be given detailed instructions to follow throughout during your consultation. The initial recovery period is relatively quick, typically only lasting two to three days. However, it is generally recommended to take at least one week off from work or your usual daily activities to allow yourself enough time to rest. Straight after your procedure, you may be instructed to avoid showering for 48 hours. You’ll be required to wear a compressions garment for three to six weeks post-surgery to promote healing, skin retraction and reduce swelling and bruising.
You can manage swelling and discomfort by applying cold compress. If the incision sites become itchy while they are healing, you should avoid scratching them to prevent further irritation. Prescription medication to manage pain and discomfort is available if needed. Lymphatic massage may be recommended for the next two to four weeks to assist with the healing process.
To support your recovery process, you will need to avoid strenuous exercise for about two weeks. Patients who were smokers before surgery will need to continue to avoid smoking for at least four weeks after the procedure. For about two weeks, you should try to sleep on your back to avoid putting pressure on your chest, and avoid drinking alcohol as it can slow down your healing process. Following a healthy diet and staying hydrated is always a good choice during recovery from any type of surgery. Additionally, you should wear loose clothing that does not require you to lift your arms, such as loose buttoned shirts.
Once you have fully recovered from your procedure, you should notice a more masculine, defined and flatter chest area. The restoration of a masculine-looking chest can increase your confidence and comfort levels, as well as improve your posture.
Costs for gynecomastia surgery will vary from patient to patient, as costs depend various factors that can be different for each individual procedure. These factors can be determined during your initial consultation with your gyno surgeon at Cosmos Clinic Sydney, where you can receive a personalised quote outlining your surgery costs.
As a general guide, costs for gynecomastia surgery with Vaser liposuction start from $5,500.
Factors that influence the overall cost of your gynecomastia surgery include:
Vaser is highly advanced technology that provides a much more enhanced method of liposuction than the traditional method, which can also be reflected in the price. As well as individual factors that will determine the procedure details, costs are also influenced by the high-tech technology required to perform the procedure, and the extensive training that doctors need to undertake to use the technology. State-of-the-art, technologically advanced methods of liposuction will generally cost more than traditional liposuction methods or alternative solutions to addressing gynecomastia.
Man boobs can have various causes, including but not limited to the following:
No procedure is without risk, but the chance of any potential side effects can be minimised by closely following your preparation and recovery instructions. You will be informed of the risks of male breast reduction surgery in greater detail during your initial consultation, where you will also have the opportunity to discuss anything that you feel concerned about. Our doctors want patients to feel as comfortable with their procedure as possible.
Gynecomastia surgery risks may include:
Your consultation will help you feel prepared. You will be able to discuss the details of the procedure, and your gyno surgeon will outline all of the necessary preparation steps that you will need to take. To prepare, you may need to:
Some additional steps to take that can help you feel prepared for your procedure are:
To know for sure, your doctor will need to examine you for a proper diagnosis. To determine the underlying cause of your gynecomastia, you may need to undergo tests such as hormone level tests or a mammogram. As a general rule, breast tissue has a firmer and denser consistency than fat. If the breast is particularly large, you may have both breast and fat tissue. In any case, Vaser liposuction can remove excess fat and gland, restoring a more masculine appearance to the area.
Patients can generally see immediate results, although initial swelling in the area can hide the full visibility of the results for up to six weeks.
Vaser liposuction is a permanent solution to gynecomastia, provided that patients follow a healthy lifestyle after surgery, and treat any underlying health conditions that may have caused the condition. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle that incudes healthy food and exercise, or addressing the underlying cause of the gynecomastia, can prevent man boobs from coming back.
It is important to take the necessary steps to prevent gynecomastia from reoccurring. However, if you do find that man boobs return after your surgery, you may be able to have a second operation. Eligibility to undergo a second Vaser liposuction procedure will depend on the individual. In the case that this occurs, you will need to have another consultation to assess your situation and determine your suitability for a second procedure.
Scarring is one of the potential side effects that can occur after your procedure, however, the incisions required for Vaser liposuction are quite small. Most of the time, the initial scarring that is present after surgery will fade and not become highly visible. The use of a topical cream to fade scarring can be used if necessary.
Patients should avoid driving after their surgery due to the limited range of motion that they will initially experience while the body is healing. We recommend arranging someone to pick you up after your surgery and wait until you have your full range of motion back before driving again. If taking pain medication that can cause drowsiness and impair your ability to drive safely, you should wait until you have stopped taking the medication to start driving. Usually, patients wait until one week after surgery to start driving again.
Cosmos Clinic Sydney uses Vaser liposuction to address gynecomastia, a procedure that can be performed on multiple areas of the body to remove unwanted fat deposits. If patients wish to treat other areas with Vaser liposuction, such as the abdomen, this may be able to be performed at the same time as the gynecomastia procedure. If this is an option that you are interested in, you can discuss the possibility of combining Vaser liposuction procedures during your initial consultation. It is important to note that treating multiple areas in the one procedure will increase the total costs of the surgery, however, it can save costs in the long run as investing in multiple procedures will require multiple associated fees, such as anaesthesia fees. Combining procedures will also mean one recovery time instead of multiple, however, treating more than one area can extend recovery time as the body will need more time to fully heal.
Pseudo-gynecomastia is when man boobs are caused by an excess amount of fat as opposed to the growth of more glandular tissue. The condition may look similar to gynecomastia, and is often referred to as gynecomastia, but is technically not the same. However, Vaser liposuction is designed to remove stubborn, unwanted fat deposits in various areas, making it suitable to treat pseudo-gynecomastia as well.
Our experienced team of doctors, registered nurses, and medical practitioners at Cosmos Clinic Sydney are passionate about delivering optimal results, helping patients achieve the aesthetic goals that they desire.
