Exercise Vs Liposuction – What You Need To Know

Diet and Exercise Vs Surgery such as Liposuction is a popular topic of discussion. Cosmos Aesthetics is aware of the challenges facing people with excess fat and are here to offer a solution and advice that’s right for you…

Liposuction is a contouring procedure not a means of losing weight. It is really designed to improve those difficult areas you cannot improve with diet and exercise.

Liposuction is not meant to be an easy way out to reduce overweight/obesity levels. It is NOT a replacement for diet and exercise. It can however be a kick-start or boost that is needed for a better and healthier life. There is no point in having liposuction if what is to follow is poor diet and/or little or no exercise.

Some individuals who have undergone liposuction may find additional motivation to continue dieting and exercising. However, motivation levels can vary widely among individuals. Everyone needs motivation somewhere along the line in their trek to look and feel better. Liposuction is perfect for that. You won’t lose much weight at all with lipo but you will in the long term since you will be motivated to continue the dieting and exercising and more apt to keep it up.

What Liposuction can & can’t do

Sometimes no matter how much you diet and exercise, there are parts of your body that will still remain bulgy, out of proportion, and unresponsive to any weight loss method you’ve tried to flatten or remove this unsightly area on your body.

Women usually have problem areas such as the lower tummy, the love handles and the thighs. Men usually have problem areas such as the belly, the love handles and the chest (manboobs). Liposuction is designed to target stubborn areas of fat, with the goal of contributing to the appearance of a fit body, although individual results may vary.

Liposuction can also be used as an alternative to a surgical breast reduction for women, or men who have gynecomastia.

Liposuction can remove up to 5 litres of fat per procedure, with a maximum of 3 procedures possible. However, the actual weight loss may vary, and individual outcomes should not be equated with the volume of fat removed. This means liposuction is not the solution for overweight or obese patients, to have all their excess weight removed.

2 kinds of fat: Subcutaneous vs Visceral

The diagram below shows the 2 main types of fat in our body.

2-Kinds-of-Fat-Fat-Facts-Cosmos-Clinic

Subcutaneous fat is stored directly underneath your skin and is the type of fat that you can pinch, in areas such as your tummy, arms, thighs or just about anywhere else on your body. This is usually the stubborn fat that causes unwanted bulges and rolls. This is the fat that can be removed with liposuction, leaving a flat, smoothed and sculpted result.

Visceral fat lays much deeper, behind muscle and underneath the subcutaneous fat. It is stored around your internal organs in your abdomen. This fat can only be effected by diet and exercise. Liposuction cannot target visceral fat.

When you should consider Liposuction

Liposuction is for people who have tried diet and exercise. Given that genetics determine where fat is stored, and it is not possible to spot reduce fat, it is just sometimes inevitable that there will be places on the body where the fat cannot be shifted. With Liposuction, it can smooth out the distribution of fat cells, contouring the body, and creating a more proportioned-looking body. Vaser ABS Liposuction takes this to the next level, using advanced technology to create the sculptured, athletic look.

Liposuction is not a permanent weight loss solution

Stressing again, Liposuction is not a method of weight loss, but is a method to resolve a problem area or two.

Liposuction is not a permanent fix if diet and lifestyle do not change afterwards. Fat can still be accumulated around the body, (however less in the area where the fat was removed due to fewer fat cells), which pose the same health risks associated with being overweight.
