Commonly referred to as “man boobs” but, more specifically known by the medical name Gynecomastia, this condition can be the cause of great anxiety. Many patients feel self-conscious and can even socially withdraw from simple activities as a result, such as going shirtless at the beach.
Unfortunately, Gynaecomastia is not a condition treatable by diet or exercise.
Causes of Gynaecomastia
While males and females naturally have varying levels of both: male (testosterone) and female (oestrogen) hormones, man boobs typically occur when there is an imbalance between the two. Males with higher levels of oestrogen are more likely to develop man boobs.
This hormonal imbalance is what causes the over-development of glandular tissue and consequently the deposition of excess fat in the breast area. In addition to that, breast tissue in men tends to be more fibrous in nature, meaning fat in this area is harder to remove. Genetics can also play a role in the formation of Gynaecomastia.
How can it be treated?
At Cosmos Clinic, man boobs are treated as a day procedure using Vaser Liposuction to efficiently remove the glandular and fat tissue. Patients are given a light sedation and a tiny 1/2 cm incision is made. Local anaesthesia is used to numb the area around the chest via a tiny 2mm cannula. After the area is numb, ultrasound energy is transmitted through an ultrasound probe to separate the fat cells from the fibrous tissue.

Traditional Liposuction for this area was difficult and much like trying to break a “brick of fat” into small pieces.
Vaser Liposuction has made this process more efficient as high energy from the ultrasound separates the fat cells from the fibrous tissue, converting it from the consistency of a “brick” to that of “melted butter”; making it easy to remove. During the procedure, the gland is also surgically removed along with the excess fat.
What happens after the procedure?
The downtime involved in getting rid of man boobs is minimal with all patients able to leave the clinic on the same day as their procedure. The recovery is quick and most patients are back at work within 2-3 days. The tiny incisions used result in minimal scarring with this procedure.
A compression garment is worn after the treatment to help reduce bruising/swelling and improve skin retraction, this is worn for 3 weeks full-time then 3 weeks part-time. On average, we recommend 2-4 post opt treatments, starting at day 1-5 after your procedure. During each 30 minute session you will be given a lymphatic drainage massage and/or a heat massage, which is undertaken by our onsite physiotherapist or nurse.
Full results are seen at 6 weeks, at this point photos are taken at the clinic to show you the results of the procedure. (*Results may vary from patient to patient). You can read more about the aftercare process by clicking here.

What is the downtime?
The gentle, efficient nature of this procedure ensures that recovery is quick with minimal downtime. Tiny incisions also mean that the procedure is relatively pain-free and scarring is almost non-existent. Recovery is quick with patients returning to normal activities within 2 to 3 days (*Results may vary from patient to patient).
Will the gland and fat come back?
During the procedure, we remove 90-100 percent of the gland depending on the quality of your skin (*Results may vary from patient to patient). The gland that is removed will not come back, the fat that is removed will not come back, and it will be harder to put on any fat in this area.
What can I expect?
Your chest will look flatter and the feminine appearance will disappear. You will feel more confident in a t-shirt or at the beach.

The examples, predictions, and results offered on this website vary from individual to individual. Results take time. They can be seen in as little as 6 weeks. This time may vary considerably depending on each individual. 6 weeks is a typical example. Results are effected by a number of factors, predominantly the way in which a patient follows instructions post surgery and the manner in which the patient behaves generally post surgery. Diet and exercise play an important part in the health and well being of a patient and in the maintenance of their body shape. Results will also vary purely based on the general make up of each patient and whether they have had surgery previously.
