How to get rid of Acne

Acne unfortunately can extend well into your adult years. It can cause confidence issues and can have major psychological effects that some never recover from.

In a nutshell, acne is formed when the sebaceous glands attached to our hair follicles (in the deep layers of our skin), produce excess oil. When this excess oil gets combined with dead skin cells, it creates a plug, trapping the oil and dead skin. Bacteria then forms which in turn causes pus (a defense mechanism in the fight against pimples) and the “pimple” forms.

Eventually the body will expel the bacteria and pus and the area begins to heal.

So what can be done to eliminate this so you can strive for and achieve picture perfect skin?

Photodynamic Therapy

I have been fortunate to have been one of the lucky people who knew about this treatment years ago. My acne was so terrible on my cheeks that I couldn’t even look at myself in the mirror, and when I was at home, used to keep a mask on my face so I didn’t have to see it. PDT worked way beyond my expectation and if you were to see my skin now, you would never think I had anything wrong with me in the past.

Photodynamic Therapy also known as PDT, in my books, is the most effective treatment today for acne without having to take any pills or the adverse side effects that medication has. It is also a quick procedure and has minimal downtime. The skin is cleaned and a solution called ALA is applied which is activated by a light source. This treatment is triggering the destruction of the sebaceous glands that hold the oil, as well as the destruction of the bacteria that triggers acne.

Your skin will become red after the treatment, and the intensity of this will depend on the strength of the ALA and the amount of time spent under the light.

Usually 2-4 treatments are needed at 2-4 week intervals. You will start seeing results after a mere two weeks and continuing to improve. Treatment lasts a good two years and you can also benefit from improved skin tone and texture.
