Liposuction: The most popular procedure in 2011

Liposuction has been voted as the surgical procedure of the year in the 2011 Readers’ Choice Awards from online magazine American Health and Beauty. And this comes as no surprise. Cosmetic surgery is extremely widespread these days, and with the advancements in technology, it appears to be as easy as obtaining a good haircut!

Media influence can definitely be contributed to the growth of the industry. As surgical and cosmetic procedures are getting safer and techniques being used gentler, results are getting much better, with more consistency, hence more people willing to visit their surgeon for the best possible treatment.

Liposuction made up nearly 19% of cosmetic surgery procedures in the US with breast augmentation a close second at 17%. So why is it that Liposuction has outweighed Breast Augmentation for the first time?

It would be a lie to say that beauty is not important in today’s society. Everyone has their own reasons to want to look good, whether it is for ourselves or looking professional for our job. We find at our clinic that most people just want to “improve their life”. People chase their perfect look, and liposuction provides an easy means to get rid of those unsightly bulges when diet and exercise just does not work.

It is also becoming increasingly popular in men. We estimate that approximately 25% of Liposuction is performed on men, with this figure expected to grow in 2012. Funnily enough as I write this, 3 men in the last half hour have booked for a liposuction consultation! Most common areas for men are “Man Boobs” and their Tummy.

Liposuction is popular as it can remove fat from just about any area of the body, whether it is your tummy, legs, buttocks, arms and even your chin! Today’s liposuction techniques, particularly Liquid Liposuction,  is minimally invasive, use only tiny incisions (so minimal scarring), and is performed under a twilight sedation so you can stand up after the procedure and the surgeon can see the result straight away. The “liquid” part helps to break up the fat prior to extraction allowing for smoother results, unlike traditional techniques that used the brute force of the surgeon to break up the fat. Recovery is much quicker than traditional liposuction techniques, with some people back at work the next day! What’s more is that it is affordable, with the benefits outweighing the costs.

It is important to note that Liposuction is NOT about weight reduction. It is about sculpting the body and helps to put bodies into proportion. It can make a person feel much more confident about themselves, from feeling comfortable to wear jeans out, to men being able to take their tops off at the beach!

If you are considering Liposuction, ensure to see a surgeon who is well respected, trusted and has had plenty of experience in performing the procedure. Ensure to see Before and After results. A consultation should help you determine whether you are a suitable candidate for the procedure.
