Cosmetic Surgery – damned if you do?

In a recent interview with Psychologie magazine, Kim Cattral, the Hollywood actress perhaps best known for playing Samantha Jones in the Sex in the City TV series (and subsequent feature films), complained that in America there is a deplorable double standard not only for ageing actresses, but for women in general.

“I think the scrutiny of women is obscene”, Cattral said, “If you don’t do anything, you’re like an old hag, and if you do, you’re a plastic surgery victim. Where can we go to age with respect and dignity? People won’t let us… It’s just so cruel.”

Fortunately, however, a number of Hollywood actresses have found a way to balance ageing gracefully and keeping their looks. Recently, stars like Betty White – famous for her ability to age gracefully – have admitted to having small procedures that don’t change their overall appearance, but keep them looking fresh for the paparazzi. For Betty White, a blepharoplasty was able to reduce the ‘tired’ appearance of her eyes dramatically. For John Wayne, a reported neck lift extended his career another 10 years. And for stars like Nicole Kidman, who has admitted to using Anti Wrinkle Injections, a couple of muscle relaxant injections have allowed them to age gracefully without resorting to extreme face lifts or structural changes in their appearance.

Luckily, there are a few procedures that are now in the reach of real people (not just millionaire celebrities) that allow us to age as gracefully as the stars. Here are some of the best ways to keep the clock at bay, without blowing the bank.

Anti Wrinkle Injections

Now an established institution in the cosmetic medicine world, Anti Wrinkle Injections are both a non-invasive and relatively painless way to reduce fine lines, smooth tired eyes, and create greater harmony in areas like the forehead and jaw line. In the hands of a skilled physician or injector, Anti Wrinkle Injections can now even be used to turn up the sides of the mouth, create a more aesthetically pleasing nose tip, and even create a totally non-surgical brow lift.

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers have been used with great success to fill out creased and sagging areas of the face, fill sunken cheeks and circles around the eyes. These fillers can even be used to create a sexier, fuller pout in the lips, reduce the impact of lumps and bumps in the nose, or create a mid face lift, but re-contouring and reshaping the dimensions and proportions of the cheekbones to the jaw.

Fractionated Laser Technology

While lasers are still probably best known for their hair removal properties, a relatively new series of laser technologies can now totally resurface and rejuvenate skin. As we age, our skin tends to thicken and become dull as layer builds on layer. Fractionated lasers are able to strategically wound tiny microscopic areas of skin, allowing the areas around them to reform, rejuvenate and stimulate the natural collagen creating processes in the skin. The result is healthy looking, glowing and youthful skin.

So before you write plastic surgery off, remember there are ways to age gracefully. Just make sure you use them like everything: in moderation.
