If you’re wanting to increase the size of your derriere you’re likely to have researched your butt augmentation options.
The two main options you’ll come across are Brazilian Butt Lift or Butt Implants. When looking online, it’s not always clear which plastic or cosmetic surgery treatment is superior and the differences between them.
There are significant differences between a Brazilian Butt Lift and Butt Implant augmentation surgery, and the results that can be achieved.
A Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure involves making small incisions in targeted areas to remove excess fat through liposuction. This allows the cosmetic or plastic surgeon to sculpt and enhance the size and shape of the patient’s figure, achieving the highly desired hourglass look.
The liposuction is followed by the fat transfer procedure where the patient’s own fat is reinjected into areas of the buttock to add volume and give a lift. The Brazilian Butt Lift procedure is performed under deep sedation.

In contrast, a buttock augmentation using silicone implants requires the artificial devices to be surgically placed into each butt cheek. These are durable, solid silicone implants with some flexibility. Incisions are typically made within the vertical butt crease with the implants sliding into or above the gluteal muscles.
Often this is used in conjunction with fat grafting to achieve maximum results and correct poor symmetry or shape concerns. Buttock implants may be the preferred option for people who have a very little amount of fat to remove. The buttock implant plastic surgery procedure is typically performed under light general anaesthesia.
By using the patient’s own fat, the BBL results can be incredibly natural. Body contouring is an added bonus of performing liposuction during the buttock augmentation surgery. By removing enough fat, patients can achieve curves in all the right places and enhance the size and shape of the buttocks.
Butt surgical procedures using implants also result in increased volume. Patients can typically choose between round or oval buttock implants which can give the illusion of shapely hips. The final results will depend on which implant shape and size the patient chooses.
Brazilian Butt Lift surgery patients can expect a recovery of about 5-7 days. For 2 weeks after the procedure, patients will be required to avoid sitting on their bottom (you can sit forward on your thighs) or placing pressure on the area for prolonged periods. They’ll also be required to wear a compression garment and attend lymphatic drainage massage appointments for the first week after surgery.
Buttock augmentation patients can typically return to quiet, low-intensity work and activities within a few days of the procedure. They’ll also be required to wear a compression garment and to take great care of the incisions for the first month to avoid serious infection.
A patient of buttock implant surgery will be required to limit their activity and exercise for a period of approximately 8 weeks. The patient will also need to refrain from using stairs and walking long distances during their recovery as muscle contraction can increase the risk of complications. Full recovery from a butt implant augmentation may take several months and, when compared to BBL, the recovery time is difficult and relies highly on patient compliance.
Every cosmetic or plastic surgery comes with its own risks. To reduce complications, it’s important the patient is fully informed about the procedure from a board-certified plastic surgeon or cosmetic surgeon and follows the post-operative procedures.
As the BBL procedure uses the patient’s own fat injections, patient’s will experience minimal fat cell loss (approximately 15-20%). This, however, is not enough to alter the results. You can read more about fat survival here. Complications such as fluid retention and adipose tissue degradation may be as a result of lifestyle or dietary choices and not adhering to the care instructions.
Besides the risk that comes with all surgeries, the major complications of butt implant surgical procedures are the displacement of the implants which can alter the appearance and cause mobility issues, and painful infection. Scar tissue, incision disruption and scar widening are also complications that can occur during the recovery period, particularly within the first 3 weeks.
