Spider Veins / Varicose Veins Treatments

Cosmos Clinic provides treatment options for Spider Veins and Varicose Veins

What type of leg veins do you have?

Generally speaking, leg veins come in 2 different variations.

  • Spider or reticular veins : These are small thin veins normally blue or red in colour and can appear on most parts of the leg.
  • Varicose veins : These veins are generally much bigger (greater than 1cm in diameter) and are quite often raised or “lumpy”. They are generally blue in colour however, they can also manifest with no colour at all.

If your veins are of the Varicose variety then you can find further information on varicose veins. However if you have spider or reticular veins please scroll down and read below.

What causes Spider Veins

Various factors cause Spider Veins including: Hormonal Issues, ageing, genetic predisposition, obesity, poor blood circulation and Sun Exposure.

Treating Spider Veins with Sclerotherapy

  • Sclerotherapy involves a number of injections into the spider veins with a substance that helps irritate the vein wall causing the vein to collapse.
  • The needle used is very thin and no local anaesthetic is required.
  • One leg is usually treated per session, with the third treatment for touching up.
  • A tight stocking may need to be worn for one week after the treatment.
  • The veins will eventually return over the following years and if they are not treated they will get worse.
  • You may develop bruising after the procedure. Other complications, like brown pigmentation and ulceration are rare.
