Anti-Wrinkle or Wrinkle Reduction Injections
As ageing occurs wrinkles develop due to a combination of the repetative movement of muscles causing the skin to crease and the natural decrease in substances such as collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, which provide the skin with structure and volume. As a result of these factors the skin sags and furrows or wrinkles are formed.
Below are the examples of wrinkle reduction treaments
Muscle relaxant
Frown lines (wrinkles between the eyebrows) crow's feet (wrinkles around the eyes) and smokers lines (wrinkles around the mouth) appear because of persistent small muscle contractions. Wrinkles that are caused by persistent small muscle contractions need to be treated with an injectable muscle relaxant

What Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections, And How Do They Work?
Anti-wrinkle injections are made from a purified protein source, if you like would further information on the specific brand / drug name, please click here.
The product works by temporarily blocking the signal between the nerve and the muscle which limits the amount of movement in that muscle for 3-4 months. Normal muscular movement is restored once the product has worn off. The result of the treatment is a more youthful, refreshed appearance with fewer wrinkles and lines.
Be aware that anti-wrinkles injections will not improve “static” lines (lines which appear even when you’re not expressing yourself) These kinds of lines are more caused by collagen loss and will usually require a resurfacing laser and or dermal fillers to achieve the optimal result. When used before deep lines set in, these injections can quite often prevent them from forming.
What Areas Can Be Treated?
The most common areas for anti-wrinkle injections are :
- Forehead lines
- Smile lines (crows feet)
- Frown Lines
- Eyebrow lifts
- Jawline contouring
What Does The Treatment Involve?
The product is injected into the offending muscles with a series of small injections which only takes 20-30 minutes in most cases. The treatment is only mildly uncomfortable and you will be left with tiny mosquito bite looking marks which will last for about 1 hour.. We commonly use ice to constrict blood vessels and therefore reduce the chances of bruising.
How Long Will The Results Last?
In most cases the results will last for up to 4 months however, this can vary a little from patient to patient. Many studies have shown that anti-wrinkle injections are far more effective and last longer when given at regular 3-4 monthly intervals. This is because the muscles weaken over time. If anti-wrinkle injections are ceased then the muscles will return to how they were before treatment .
When Can I Get Back To Normal Activities
Straight away, however we advise not to massage your face for a few days following the procedure.
Is It Safe?
Yes, anti-wrinkle injections have been used for over 20 years in both cosmetic and therapeutic treatments without any reported long issue. Infact, anti-wrinkle injections are commonly in higher dosages to treat children with cerebral palsy to reduce muscle spasms, lazy eye and excessive sweating.
What Are the Possible Side Effects Of Anti-Wrinkle Injections?
The are generally no side effects associated with anti-wrinkle injections , most patients will have treatment for many years without every encountering an issue. On the odd occasion a bruise may appear, however this can be covered with makeup if required. Small mosquito bite marks appear following treatment, although this only last for approx 1 hour following the anti-wrinkle injections. Other complications can include under dosing which results in little to no improvement in the wrinkles and lines. In 1% of people the product can migrate into the eyelid area when performing an eyebrow lift which can cause a temporary drop in the eyelid that can last for up to 1 month. There are eye drops available which can assist with this.
Other Treatments With Anti-Wrinkle Injections
Anti-wrinkles injections can be used to treated sweating in the hands, feet and under arms. The anti-wrinkles product blocks the signal between the nerve and the sweat gland and there reduces excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) for about 8 months. The sweating will slowly return to normal after this period. Anti-wrinkles injections into above areas can be a little sensitive so anaesthetic gas is commonly used to make the procedure more comfortable for the patient.
As mentioned earlier on this page, anti-wrinkle injections can also be used to shape various parts of the body, such as the jawline and the calves. By injecting the product into these muscles we can reduce overly developed calves and jawlines to get a more gentle, contoured look. This is especially popular for people with “square” looking jaws and women with over masculine looking legs. Results in using anti-wrinkles injections for these types of treatment generally last 8-12 months in most cases.
