Most of us by now have heard about stem cells and all of the amazing things we are beginning to do with them. Certainly stem cells hold the key to the eternal fountain of youth and the cure for diseases, deformities, defects, the list goes on and on. The problem with stem cells up until recently has been where do we get them from? Obviously harvesting embryonic stem cells has its issues and has been a major factor in slowing down the research and development into this technology.
What if I told you that fat could hold the key to this technology? Yes fat! all of those unwanted bludges and tummies contain a rich supply of precious stem cells that we could use. Think of all the liposuction procedures performed around the world today and how much fat is disposed of. The average liposuction procedure would see the removal of at least 1-2 litres of pure fat! Multiply this by the thousands of cases performed everyday! - That's a lot of stem cells!
So what can we do with the fat stem cells?
In terms of use in the cosmetic field, the answer to that question is limitless. Early research indicates that these stem cells could be used for:
1. Breast Augmentation
2. Buttock Augmentation
3. Facial Rejuvenation (shaping and removing lines / wrinkles)
At the moment we can harvest these stem cells successfully however, separating the cells from the fat is a time consuming and expensive exercise which isn't making the technology a practical solution.
Finding quick and cost effective ways of doing this is currently underway here at Cosmos...WATCH THIS SPACE!
